Something not often seen: M42 Komura 135mm f/2.3

I've been looking around for web references to this lens, and pickings are very slim indeed. Asahiflex posted a Komura 80/1.5 earlier, this one's from the same series. It was sitting in a box with some other M42's at a camera show...

I count 16 blades

(Product shots with an Auto-Takumar 50/4 preset, K100D)

Period Komura brochure:
Camera Eccentric: Info
Specs: 5 elements, min focus 5’ (I get about 4.5’), 115mm long, 23oz, 62mm filter

I don’t like the 135mm focal length, but this is the 6th such I have . I kind of like this one.

Wide open it shows some spherical aberration, an a very thin plane of focus. Probably good for some kind of soft focus portraits. By 2.8 the spherical aberration gets much better, but there’s still a bit of softness… eventually things solidify.

The bokeh looks to be very smooth and neutral, and color is very good, golden warm.

@5.6, full size (100%) available as the largest size on flickr

f/4, I barely got the kid into focus – my other shots had the edge of the hedge in focus

f/4, full size (100%) available via flicr

f/4, this is a 100% crop, shows some softness (or slightly missed focus)…

f/2.3, shows the nice smooth oof, though over exposure on the gull (1/4000s @ ISO200)

f/5.6, the lens handles a bright background pretty well

I have this down as f/2.3 but I think it’s really f/2.8

f/2.8 at around 5 ft

Nesster, nice and interesting lens. Another addition to the arsenal of lens info here on PF.
Seen the first one in the Rust thread, third one of the children is wicked sharp and the seventh of the newspaper is great. I originally thought the last one was taken with a Russian lens. In fact, I thought it was of someone vacationing at their dacha and reviewing the obits of old party members! It simply has that feeling. Don't know why. Wonder what it would look in B&W?
Good find and thanks for posting.

LOL, thanks for the free association, that's fun! I'll try a b&w, maybe I should reshoot with my Fed

I think I lucked out with this Komura, literally I've seen something like 2 or 3 other references to this one online, so it is surprisingly rare. And maybe valuable too.
