Sigma 100-300 f4 vs Sigma 50-500 Bigma

Hello again everyone, I've got a rather large motorsports event next weekend that I am heading out to watch/photograph and am looking to replace my 70-300 APO DG as I purchased the lens back during the Canadian Grand Prix to meet the needs I had for a telephoto lens for shooting the event. I've pretty much narrowed the field down to these two lenses, one of course giving me the same length I currently have but a constant f4 and the other being roughly in the same aperture range but giving me a very large amount of range for shooting. The track will be Mosport, which is a godsend for photography as there's no insane fencing all around but the track does change significant and some areas do sweep further away from the track.

Price point is exactly the same for both lenses so I'm left with weighing out image quality from the lenses as what makes the final decision (though the 100-300 becomes more expensive than the Bigma if I mate it to a 1.4x TC to make it a 140-420mm f5.6). I've seen quite a number of people shoot motorsports with the Bigma but often the complaint seems to be that it is a slower lens and the AF tends to hunt as well as some very random complaints about dust finding its way into the lens due to the vacuum when zooming.

I will try to get out and shoot some motorsport of some description with the Bigma Saturday and hopefully have some photos up for you on Sunday night.

Constant F4 would be nice, and you'd have to be a LONG way away to need the full 500mm so maybe the 100-300 would be ok.

If this lens is produced in SDM for Pentax I will buy one for sure: APO 120-300mm F2.8 EX DG HSM.

I too was looking at these two lenses (100-300 f/4 and 50-500) and have decided to go for the 100-300 for handling and aperture advantages. Trouble is, in the UK Pentax dealers can't seem to get hold of it. THey certainly don't stock it...

I would love one of these as well if they would offer it for Pentax.

Can you believe that a 120-300mm f2.8 zoom is a fair deal cheaper than OEM 300mm 2.8 prime lenses?

According to the sigma site, even their own EX 300/2.8 costs more!

Yeah, I noticed that when shopping around and nearly spat my coffee out that the 2.8 zoom was cheaper than the prime, go figure.

I think I'm going to end up chancing the Bigma and see how it plays out this coming weekend. I bought 300mm for the Formula One and it just didn't have enough reach for me (every shot I took just felt the same, no wiggle room to give different compositions when I maxed out at 300). It's a toss-up as blwnhr's photos in the soccer thread look fantastic and I've seen some great shots with the Bigma for motorsports plus the Bigma got an 8.8 rating and the 100-300 f4 a 9.5 (not much difference in my eyes really).

The 70-300 was fine for Formula One because it was so bright and sunny the entire weekend so I don't see the Bigma performing any worse in the given conditions... i hope. Though I managed to get ahold of a photographer who frequenst Mosport and he informed me that he uses a 400mm Canon prime for shooting and even with track side access in some areas he puts a 1.4x TC on it to get close enough.
