Question on Pentax 17-70mm lens...why it has rubber seal on back??

Question for everyone,

I have a newer Pentax 17-70mm lens that has a rubber seal on the back just like the DA* lenses. I was told by another forum member that its weather sealed but just not advertised by Pentax. Can anyone shed any light on this if this is true or was this a trial thing by Pentax but just not advertised???

I really like the lens and its performance and quality of shots have been great, but I'm always cautious about taking it outside if the weather looks questionable...

Look forward to your responses....

Thanks...

It has better weather resistance than a Pentax lens without the rubber seal.

Since I don't have one, I can't confirm or deny, but just because it's sealed at the mount doesn't mean the entire lens is.

I'm sure someone here has the info

My DA17-70 is not new, but it does have a thin O-ring around the mount. However, I don't know how weather resistant the moving parts may be.

I agree VIXIV which is exactly why I'm asking. The forum member that told me about this lens works in a camera store which I would think he knows the pentax product line. I was hoping that one of our pentax insiders might know this.
I'm wondering if it might serve well to post this question to the B&H folks??

I've heard that the lens needs to seal the built-in electronics. The entire lens isn't sealed, but the parts that fry when it rains are better sealed.

It's partially weather sealed, i.e. water cannot get into the camera through the lens mount/bayonet.

I had no problems using it (with my unsealed camera) in snowing or light rain (sifting? rain). Common sense still beats WR in my book.
