Sigma 28-300mm DG Marco Vs others

There are no reviews for the Sigma 28-300m DG Macro lens on here so are there any of you out there that have used this lens? Is it any good?

I want to get the Sigma or the Tamron 28-200 XR Di. Which do you believe will be the better performer?

Also if I get the Tamron lens, is there really a difference between the XR and the XR Di version?

I just ordered the Sigma 28-300 DG from B+H so I hope it is a good performer as an all around zoom.

I don't get the point of a 28-300 lens on APS-C. You're getting all the compromises and high cost of superzoom to ostensibly have a one lens solution, but it lacks wide angle, so you end up needing another lens anyhow.

A wide angle would be nice but I cannot afford a 12-24 or 10-20 or the 18-200. I found both the sigma 28-300 and the tamron XR 28-200 (no Di version yet) both for about $100, so I would like to know which lens is better.

That is fair and to be honest I did not really consider that I would be losing (or gaining as it were) much on the short end due to sensor sizes. But even when it works out to be less wide or a focal length greater than true 28, I still desire a (somewhat) wide to long multiple use tool. I am not asking it to replace all the lenses in my bag; just a few. Or perhaps be one of only a few when I want to travel light.

Fair enough. Especially if you can get the 28-300 for $100! Normally they sell for as much as the far more versatile 18-200's (eg, $300-$400).

I have no insight into which is "better", but frankly, I'd expect any different in optical quality to be trumped by the difference between 200mm and 300mm. If you're going to go for a non-wide semi-super zoom, might as well get the one that goes to 300mm even if it's not *quite* as good. Pair it with an 18-55 to cover wide angle and you'll have a setup that requires fewer lens changes than the more traditional pairing of a 18-55 with a dedicated telephoto zoom like the 50-200 or 55-300.

The 28-200(or 300), would be my "I want to travel with only 1 lens" kit. I'm pretty sure the optical differences between the 18-200, 28-200 and the 28-300 will be negligable. So I probably cannot go wrong with any of those lenses for around $100. Thanks for all of the insight.
