So I went to Click Camera today to try on the DA* 16-50...

...And the SDM was completely dead, no noise, no AF whatsoever.

It was the last DA* 16-50 the company had in stock at any location.

I lol'ed on the inside.

...probably was actually a returned/restocked item from someone on this forum. As we all know, selling to a PF member is the kiss of death for any camera or lens.

either sales are too good that DA* production cant keep up or Hoya/Pentax are concentrating on other parts of the world like Asia.

I LOL inside when I push the AF button on my camera and my DA* lenses (whichever one is mounted up) snaps into focus. That is, unless I've turned off the AF on the lens with the AF/MF switch. I Will say in response to another poster, that I bought all of mine Before I became an active poster on THIS forum.

These support screwmount too, so why doesn't pentax release a firmware to let you use screwmount instead of sdm?

Was the AF switch (on the lens) set to AF?

Pentax should design the AF switch like [SDM/E-AF/MF].
* E-AF: emergency AF which is essentially the good old noisy but never failed slot AF.

After reading this thread I wondered if my 16-50 with a new HSM (that's what the invoice said, not SDM...) motor was still functional, since I hadn't used it in a few weeks.

It was already mounted to my K20D so turned the camera on, press AF button. Nothing happened, just like the bad 'ol times before I returned the *&^%$# lens for repair some time ago.

So I mount the only other SDM lens I have and it works fine, thus eliminating the camera and the user as the possible culprits :-)

Shame on Pentax!
