Anyone ever heard of a 100 mm Vivitar macro?

I've been offered a 100 mm vivitar macro lens, 1:1 enlargment, PK/A mount. I cannot test it however, it's not presently in my city.

I've heard of the 105 mm of course, but the 100 is new for me. Does anyone know nything about it? Is it any good? Worth something?

I presently have the FA 50 macro and I expect to keep using that one. But the vivitar might be an interesting lens to own, for a time at least.

If it has a serial number that starts with #22, that may be a copy of Vivitar 100mm f/2.8 1:1 Macro by Kiron. It is a wonderful lens very similar to the Lester A Dine 105mm f/2.8 1:1 Dental Macro. The most important thing is to check on the serial number that is usually found on the front's front.

Good luck and hope this helps you.

It seems to be the exact same lens. It does start with 22. Is it worth as much as the Lester version?

Could also be the 100mm f3.5 fantastic plastic. Which is a 1:2 lens and requires a (usually) supplied closeup lens to take it to 1:1. If that's the case, in my experience, that lens is quite sharp throughout and has a value (at last check) of about $125 US.

I've had the Vivitar 100/3.5 and recall it was quite satisfactorily sharp at both 1:2 macro and at portrait distances. Made by Cosina if I remember correctly. Well worth the going price of $100-125. It does need the matched close-up filter to get to 1:1 but any quality set of diopter filters will suffice and extension rings worked well too.

Although the plastic body isn't too impressive it held up well to knock-about service as a sort of "expendable" kit lens and I had no problems with it. It was replaced with a Tamron SP 90/2.5 which doesn't see as much field use owing to its heavier weight. I wish I'd kept it for that reason alone.

Its a good lens and the one that I've seen is an A series f2.8-32 and Kiron made.

I've got the 2.8/100mm macro in KA and it's practically the same lens as the Kiron/Viv Series1/Lester D. I think they only look a bit different and some versions have a sliding hood and some don't (mine does). I think I read somewhere that there might also be different coatings?.

So if the price is right and and the serial starts with 22 go for it! You won't be disappointed.
