DA* 50-135mm SDM Squeak

I bought DA* 50-135 from B&H on previous week. The strange thing I've noticed that it squeaks while focusing with SDM (I use it on K20D). I happens when the lens reaches the bounds of the focusing range (1m and infinity). I've heard a lot of scary stories about SDM failures so I'm wondering if this sound is OK and I shouldn't be worried about it.

My friend's copy started squeaking more than a year ago

He has it checked by Pentax's service centre and was told it's initial sign of SDM failure

He was advised to keep using it until it failed or the squeaking becomes too annoying

He had the SDM changed about 3 months ago though it doesn't fail. He just couldn't stand the squeaking noise which is getting louder by the day :ugh:

If you can still return your copy and try another, do it. I think some of these copies just kept going from one to another as actions weren't taken to remedy them

I don't know that this is true. My da* 55mm squeaks, especially when autofocusing in live view, and there are no reported sdm failures with the 55mm.

Does it peep or actually squeak (something like sound of car brakes)?

Mine makes a bit of squeaking noise... haven't had any problems with it yet. I hope it's not failing.

I just retested mine, and it does only happen at the bounds of the focusing range. I hadn't noticed that before.

it's longer than a peep, but certainly less than car breaks.

I do not know if squeaking is a sign but mine was making it from day 1 and the motor finally died, the motor was replaced under warranty and now the lens is silent like my DA*300.

How long had it been working before it died?

I had to turn the focus ring from one end to another to wake up the motor but this happened 2 or 3 times.

I had the same issue a while ago and got my 50-135mm sent it to repair via warranty. After getting it back I also noticed that now the AF was noticably better and that the squeaky problem in AF also affected the MF. If you are still in warranty, I'd send it in ASAP to CRIS cameras if you can. If not, i don't know what to say but IDK if you want to find out
