I can't comment on you comparison question as I've no experience. As for the zoom, if you really want that kind of flexibility, consider the Sigma 100-300mm and a 1.4xtc

I just wanted to update you on my decision.

I ended up with a DA* 300mm f/4 that I grabbed from the marketplace.

I was really looking for better AF and IQ since I was coming from a Tamron 70-300. I didn't want to compromise with the 150-500 or 100-300. The DA* 300 is also smaller than the big zoom options and is very hand holdable. The 300mm will also take a TC more readily and will give me equivalent reach of a big zoom with better quality in a smaller package.

SDM is absolutely fantastic as this is my first lens that has it. Now I just need a quiet shutter to match it.

Oddly, it seems I've got a good bit of back focus with the 300mm f/4, but adding +110 seems to have fixed it up.

I've also added a battery grip which makes using the lens much nicer (and really it adds to the camera's handling with any lens). I also picked up a Sun Sniper strap since a K10D + grip + 300mm gets pretty heavy around the neck. It makes the camera seem relatively weightless now!

Here are a few samples from this past week:

To extend the manual focus long telephoto suggestions above you might consider the SMC Pentax M 400/5.6.

It has some issues with CA/PF in certain conditions but can be had for far less than a DA* 300/4.

Great shots Dominique. You put that DA* 300/4 to good use. By way of comparison here's a few Waxwing shots from the M 400/5.6.

It takes some getting used to but I like it.

Here is a Cardinal taken with the Bigma (Non HSM or OS). I find that if I use a tripod and remote release, I can get very sharp results with it most of the time, even at 500mm.
BIF pictures are harder to achieve at 500mm, at least for me. I shoot most of those at 3-350mm then crop if needed.

Nice work with the Bigma. I'm leaning toward getting one for wildlife and its convenience.

I think you will like it. Once you get over the size and weight you will learn get the best out of it. It has been my most used lens since I got it. Now I am shopping for a new ballhead since the Manfrotto I have creeps every time I tighten the ball.
