compatability

I have found a 1.4 50mm lens for sale from an older 35mm pentax. The owner doesnt seem to think it is compatible with my digital kx. I was led to believe it wouldnt matter? Any thoughts are appreciated. He also is selling a SMC 35-70mm lens, which I looked up on the lens review pages, but didnt seem to learm much. If anyone has info on that lens it would be appreciated as well.

Thanks
Dan

This owner clearly doesn't know about Pentax's backward compatibility.
Any lens you can fit onto your K-x, even if via an adapter, can be used (albeit with some limitations) to take photos. You just gave to know how to use the lens on the camera, and you'll be fine.

The first step is to set the camera to accept non-A lenses on your custom menu option, then learnt the quirks of using M lenses. If you're being sold A lenses, then the process is much simpler - just use your camera's dials to set the aperture, focus the lens and shoot!

Atop the BEGINNERS page is a sticky: Using Manual Lenses on Pentax dSLRs. Much can be learnt there. And remember, ANY Pentax-compatible lens ever made will fit onto your Kx. CAVEATS: Some Vivitar and other 3rd party lenses may have an oversized aperture flag that needs to be trimmed. Some Sears and Ricoh and other 3rd-party lenses with a KR (Pentax-K + Ricoh) mount have the infamous Ricoh Pin that may need removal. Other than those, you are good to go.
