Auxiliary Telephoto Lens for Sports Action Photography?

Hello,
I am new to dslr camera photography and have purchased a used Pentax *ist DL that came with a DA 18-55 zoom lens. I'd like to have telephoto capability for taking sports pictures of my son's middle school football games. Parents are not allowed on the field so the shooting distance will be 100 - 300 feet from the stands. The DA 18-55 zoom lens does not magnify enough for that distance.

Has anyone used an auxiliary telephoto lens that screws onto the threads of the zoom lens (52mm diameter) much like a filter screws on?

How does an auxiliary telephoto lens attached to a zoom compare to a standard telephoto lens in terms of quality?

Regards, Ed

No, not a hope, unfortunately, and your kit lens won't take to a tele-converter very well either because of its small aperture. I would suggest you pick up something like a used A 70-210/4, and learn manual focus, or pick up a used AF telephoto. Check the forum lens reviews in the focal range you are thinking of and pick one, then look in the marketplace for one that is for sale. You should be able to get an adequate - not superb! - on a small budget.

For low budget options, a second hand DA or DA L 55-300 would be a good choice for daylight games. Tamron and Sigma have also built several generations of 70-300mm consumer lenses that sell for under $200 new and closer to $100 used.

Buy a 70-200/f2.8, or if you can't afford it, either the 50-200 or 55-300.
If you can't afford that, a 70-300 from a range of manufacturers.

You can look at the FA 100-300 f4,7 (NOT f4,5), a very reliable and underpriced used lens.

Same way bolting an engine and a couple of benches onto a bicycle compares to a car.
