Ricoh/Sears Autofocus 50mm F2? What?

Just bought this on ebay, and I can't find any info on it at all, google, or the lens reviews here. Anybody know anything about it?

Outstanding 50mmf2 Early autofocus lens - eBay (item 260653001603 end time Aug-26-10 05:56:14 PDT)

I don't know much except for having seen them for sale "back in the day". I would expect that it may not mount to cameras with a built-in flash projection on the prism housing.

I am not positive but I think with these lenses you have to press a button on the lens to AF and then the shutter on the camera to take the picture. Made things a little awkward.

I don't mind doing that. Even if it doesn't autofocus, I'll just use it manually.

I was looking at one of these lenses as well. Saw it for the first time 2 days ago. What camera were you planning on mounting it on?

I doubt it will fit on my K-x. It looks like it might fit on my Vivitar v2000. For sure it will fit on the K1000.

The AF sensor sits on top of the lens and may not clear the overhang caused by the flash unit of a Pentax dSLR and perhaps even those on certain Pentax film cameras. This is an issue with many older mirror telephotos lenses as well as some bellows units.

Notice the lack of clearance in this rear view of the lens...

I don't remember if the lens and the AF unit can be separated, but that might be one option if you want to use it on a more recent camera.

Steve, it really depends on where the "box" ends up and how it ends up there. I can mount the Pentax AF 35-70mm/2.8 lens on the K20d and K200d bodies. The only real point of doing so is to check out the optics on digital.

In all the pictures I've seen the red dot is always top dead center below the big af sensor. I doubt it can be rotated or removed from the lens.

Here's a picture from another ebay auction:

That's mighty close.

I remember seeing the lens new in stores in the mid-1970s and the full package is not particularly compact. The "box" sits topside and as @ORCO's photo shows, there is not much clearance.

What I find weird is that there seems to be a flurry of inquiries and also of active auctions for both the Ricoh and Sears versions of this lens.

Well either way, looks like a pretty cool piece of photo tech, let us know how it works out!

Was gonna try to mount it to my K-x. Well if I can take the AF housing off, I will. And if I can't, well then I only wasted $15, and I'll keep it for whenever I buy a Pentax film camera, which I was planning on doing at some point.

Or you could get a 1.4x TC and it will definitely mount. A nice retro auto focus 105mm f2.8. Or use some extension tubes to give you that few millimeters you'll need.

I'm considering getting one of these. It's way too cool looking.

Just got it today, and yeah, it won't mount because of clearance issues.

But there are lil screws that can be taken out, so as soon as I find my tiny screwdrivers I'll try to take the AF housing off. Seems like a cool lens though. I'll let you guys know what happens if I ever get to use it.
