Who is excited about the DA*55 F/1.4?

I have no primes at the moment and have come within a hair of purchasing the fabled FA 50 F/1.4. Now I'm just going to have to wait and see how much extra money Pentax is going to charge for a nearly identical lens that has SDM and weather-sealing. I'm hoping no more than $250 after rebate (I can get the FA 50 F/1.4 for about $160 after rebate).

Weather sealing and SDM ain't as important as getting the optics sharp at 1.4!

Actually I would so appreciate if they built it like the M-series. that would be nice.

Could not agree more. I'm assuming Pentax will get the optics right on a * lens.

I'd be surpried if it was that cheap..... but who knows. Fa is MSRP $300 Expect the 55 to be MSRP 400-500 w/ rebate still would be 3-400 plus.
BUT all just speculation. Buy what you need now.. and unless weather sealing and USM is important, it's probably not worth waiting for. Can't really imagine it being MUCH better in image quality.
Besides the FA50 should hold it's value and be easily sold for zero (possibly profit on crazy ebay for those that won't/can't do rebates ) to minimal loss. And sorry to be so negative here but the 55 is still an iffy lens. Consider possible production delays (no date set on the roadmap even)and who knows, it may never be produced...though that would be kind of dumb on Pentax part....
If the 200 and 300 are released in Sept as promised (were getting close) then MAYBE the 55 date will be set. Don't hold your breath though.

Spot-on analysis, jeffkrol.

We don't know how much difference USM will make to focusing speed. We do know it will make the lens expensive and heavy.

I'd value the DA* more for its weathersealing and Quickshift than for USM. I have an A 50/1.7 I bought on eBay that I'm in no hurry to get rid of, though I have been tempted by the FA 50. All things being equal, though, I prefer a manual focus lens to an AF lens without Quickshift.

Right now, the only lenses I own are the A 50 and the DA 40. I'm making a project of working exclusively with the DA 40 for a month or two, to help develop my eye and refine my style. I'll probably finish the "Pancake Stack" ( I already know I want the DA 70) before I pop for any DA * lens. Unless Pentax uncharacteristically step things up, I'll have plenty of time to decide if the DA*55 is worth whatever Pentax plan to charge.

It would be nice if the DA* were built like a Super Takumar. Unfortunately, the mechanics of autofocus don't allow for the close tolerances of the older lenses. Pity. Still, my DA 40 lacks only by comparison.

I'd be surprised if there was a rebate on a brand new lens. Also theres more discussion about this in another thread on the same page.

I'd be excited if focal length was between 30mm - 35mm.

From my experience with 50mm lenses at f1.4 I can say that the MAIN problem Pentax has to solve is to get the autofocus right with such a lens.
The current AF system Pentax has to offer is not very well suited for an f1.4 lens.

But if it works, it will be a GREAT lens and I will certainly buy it.
