Nope. Not needed. The light up there is very bright, so you'll be operating stopped down anyway. I'd stick with just the 18-250, and that DA15mm for those "special" shots for the "Controls my Mind" thread of Jay Sherman's.

Oh yes - don't forget the polariser for up there too.

I will most likely rent a car in Brisbane, are there any National Parks or Animal Santuaries that are within driving distance say within 50km from Broadbeach?
In Brisbane, the Lone Pine Koala sanctuary (http://www.koala.net/index.php) is another great place to see koalas, wallabies, kangoroos.... Highly recommended especially for kids! It is 10 min. from the city center (accessible by bus and car), and would be about 50 min. drive from Broadbeach.

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is also a nice place to visit with kid (http://www.cws.org.au/).

Hi HCC

Thanks for your recommendations. The Pine Koala Sanctuary sure looks interesting.

I'd have a hard time going anywhere without the 12-24.

But for you I think the 17-70 and 70-200 is the best compromise.

Thanks for the head up! Will have polariser at hand for sure.

By the way, we will have one day free to roam around and we will hire a car, any suggesting where we should be visiting around Port Douglas(no kids btw)?

DA 40 _____ 2
FA 50 _____ 1
FA 77 _____ 1

Quite disappointing as third party lenses win in this election. Would like to see more (biased) recommendations. hahaha

Don't think it's got anything to do with the brand of the lenses .... it's versatility you need for a trip like this, so out of your lens collection the 2 Siggies got the vote. I am sure if you got a Pentax DA17-70 and DA 55-300 they would got the vote instead of the Sigmas...

haha yeah, definitely nothing to do with the brands. Since you're travelling, the safer bet it always to go with the zooms for versatility! and the sigma 17-70 is a definite, as it covers the most average/standard focal lengths. the Sigma 70-200 to cover longer range things such as times when you can't get close enough to take shots of a street performance (lots of those here in brisbane), birds (lots of crazy birds here), and girls on the beach (lots of those at the gold coast ).
I'd just recommend you take those two + the 12-24 if you can fit it, because wide angles are great for taking scenery. If you have plans to go up the Q1 (tallest building in surfer's paradise), you'd be able to get an awesome wide angle shot of the gold coast from above as well.

If it were me, the only lenses I would leave behind would be the 40mm or the 90mm, but then again the 40 is so small and light, it would probably find a corner of a bag somewhere to hide in, or maybe in a pair of jocks....

I'd probably be taking a TC (assuming you have one) for the long lens as well, especially if I were planning to visit wildlife/theme parks.

I'd carry the flash for the night time shots of your lovely wife and child.

I must have been a boy scout once....Be Prepared!
