I owned 3 DA* 16-50's, and I have a Canon EFS 17-55 f/2.8 USM. I wouldn't even put the two in the same class. The 17-55 has remarkably fast focussing with true ring-USM. The optics are "L" level without the added price. Even wide open, the 17-55 is sharp in the corners at the "very good" level or above, at all focal lengths:

Pentax needs a lens that can compete with this. The DA* 16-50 is not that lens.
