Spooky lens ID

I have a friend who used to have Pentax medium format gear and worked as a professional photographer.
I like to show him new lenses I have acquired
He knows a Takumar when he sees one.
Watching the spark of recognition and sigh of appreciation on seeing my K50/1.2
for instance, was fun.
The tiny DA40 had him going

Last night I thought I'd give him a treat so I put the new
Tele-Takumar 200/5.6 preset

in the FA100 Macros soft bag

and ventured forth.

All I said was 'It cost $48 inc' as I passed it to him.

now at this point dear reader, you should understand my vulnerability...
He could look at it and go 'pfffttt...whats this old thing ?'

...and I would be reduced to mumbling about Shake Reduction.
All the while his shiny new Canikon G11 glares at me from nearby.
There was other company watching the melodrama too,
unaware of the risks at stake.

He took the lens in the bag
and rather than open it started feeling the lens within.
This was a surprise.
My intuitive reason for not bringing it in its own case with its name
on it

now became apparent...

The room fell silent as he looked wisely to the heavens

In about 5 seconds he confidently said...
200mm....
had another squeeze and said...5.6 preset !

I was stunned
Wonderful thing the human brain !

If you had brought that lens over to my house? You would not have gone home with it, lol. I covet more Takumars in the worst way. Anyone who brings Takumars into my house that I don't have is tempting fate and my better nature. That's why I'd never sign up for the roving lens bit. I just don't think I could bear to say "Goodbye" to a Takumar. IF I could even manage to get it back to the post office I'd probably end up on the floor sobbing my little Takumar loving heart out at the sorrow of parting with one!

I don't take owning mine for granted. I only have 3 (50MM, 55MM, 105MM, all M42) but you'd probably have to step over my cold, dead body to get at them. I'd probably share my other lenses if I ever got to the point where I actually had extras and could afford to do without one for a while, but not those.

One day I'm going to add a wide angle and a 200 or 300MM Takumar to my little collection, maybe an 85MM and a 500MM too if I can ever afford them. Till then I'm just going to have to live with my second hand cheap little Vivitars, but it's definitely a goal.

Queenie (SPII) does deserve a good set of Takumars and I do mean to get them for her eventually, but right now I'm saving for a used K-DSLR for Christmas and more Takumars just have to come after that.

I'm really glad I don't have friends here at home who have them and come over to tempt me though. It's hard enough looking at all the pics from you all here. You guys, some of the collections I've seen on here? You could make a saint lust for lenses...

Well, don't be disappointed but I'm now telling you how "The Mentalist" did it: He knows your ebay account and checks your most recent snipe before you meet. Easy.

LOL! I'm very glad the new season will be starting soon. I really miss Simon and Co. The Mentalist is one of the few shows I watch regularly actually. My only beef with it is that the show's plots are sometimes too easy for what he's supposed to be. If I can figure out "who done it" within 10-15 minutes then surely it's not that difficult and they wouldn't need a "mentalist" to do it. It's a great show though. Wouldn't miss it.

I feel your pain I sold a 55/1.8 once, then learned it was one of the good ones

Funny about that 105, I know what you mean
apart from the cold dead body bit
