DA* 50-135 SDM failure pattern?

Is there any pattern in DA* 50-135 SDM failure? say, any particular year or serial number or is it random and happening in all the models

Thanks
Yusuf

No, just keep your fingers crossed

Some say that the newer copies have an upgraded SDM but nothing official.

If I would purchase a SDM lens, I'd take it from the shop, with warranty

Some never had problem, some said it has been addressed, some kept reporting failures till this day. There seems to be no certain pattern. Just pay & pray if you must buy one, and factor in the repair cost after the warranty expired. Personally I fail to see any pattern.

IMO the SDM lenses are for pros or wealthy enthusiasts.

If you are a pro, then factor in the possible SDM failure/repairs in the total cost of ownership since the DA* zooms are amongst the best money can buy for any system and even with one paid repair the total cost is not more than it would be for a new equivalent from canikon.

If you are the latter, then ... the possible added cost is bearable since you have the dough

I had a SDM lens and sold it (50-135mm) because of the bulk and the fear of SDM failure. But I am no pro, if that would've been the case, I'd kept it for the stellar performance, no doubt.

Buy a warranty with the lens. I have had mine for 2 years without problem, but I wouldn't be shocked if I woke up tomorrow and it didn't work. At the same time, it is one of my favorite lenses and I wouldn't give it up. If it breaks, I'll make sure it gets fixed.

Mine is two years in march, so I better sell before my warrenty ends.

I think there are 1 or 2 threads specific to keeping track of failed SDMs...

My 50-135 SDM failed after 13 months, just out of warranty. It was not heavily used. I paid the shop $200 to repair it. The focus motor was bad. I was not happy. An $800 lens shouldn't break in a year.
