hey, just wondering - say I buy an old takumar and the seller only has a rear or front cap, or neither - would screwmount lenses work okay with, say, the rear cap from my kit lens? And the same for front caps?

Front caps maybe, rear caps no. Screw mount lenses are smaller diameter than k mount at the rear. In simple terms the M42 to K mount adaptor would not work if they weren't

Front caps will work any time the filter sizes are the same
