I guess the currency exchange rate is to explain here. The S-Tak 85/1.9 can be had for $230-250 in the US and the SMC-Tak 85/1.8 runs for about $300-350. The Vivitar S1 90/2.5 is probably the sharpest of the bunch and will go for $350-400 with the macro converter.
All the auctions I see on ebay are 350+ for the super taks

After he made the pricing comment, I checked. Completed auctions on ebay, the f1.9 in the last 30 days has sold for around $250. The f1.8, around $350. All with several bids and I'm sure the snipers got them in the end. KEH, has an f1.9 and they want $399 for it. I think they price things way too high in many cases though.

These are just the recently completed ones. With some patience, it can be had for lower.

The 44s haven't changed much, they can still be had for roughly $30-40. The Helios 40s have really exploded in value. Imagine if you had invested in a hundred of these? This is what really irks me. The Helios 40 was never known as a high performance lens, yet it somehow has reached cult status in a very short period of time, probably due to its unique bokeh. I wonder who's responsible for it? Somebody must have posted some amazing photos with it somewhere.

Even on a crop sensor, the Helios 40-2's corner sharpness is just... pathetic:

Below f4, it's probably on par with a pinhole camera. Fortunately, corner sharpness is not important for portraits and it could very well enhance the effect. Keep in mind, I think this is a great lens and I'd love to use one. Some have complained about the current prices of Takumars but that pales in comparison to the Helios 40s.

I'm all about finding bargains. Many of them have paid for some of the lenses on my list. Many of the lenses on my list have cost next to nothing by the time it's said and done (K30 f2.8 for instance). Camera outfits are a great resource. Only drawback is, that I have a bunch of film cameras I don't want. Eventually they go but it takes time.

I dumped my Helios 40 (1) several years ago, for $225 IIRC, complete with the odd sized filters and the case. The price for that particular lens (on ebay) hasn't changed much. The version 2 however, has gone completely insane. People have a love hate feeling about that particular lens. Either you like it, or you don't. For me, 4 pounds or whatever it weighs was too much and it never got used.

As for 85mm Patience... FA*85 f1.4 please. Been looking for a bargain on that one for the last 3 years.

I never thought of that, buying the bodies with the lenses already mounted, IIRC someone on another forum grabbed an old Soviet Camera with a helios 40 for 30 dollars , and on another someone grabbed an old leica body with a 50mm f2 ( summicron?) for under 100 bucks cos it was all dusty!

Back to ebay!

oh and to keep on topic, my father actually has some soft felt buffing disks for his dremel, so once it shows up, we will give it a go

cheers
