Pentax M 28mm F2.0

Anybody have this lens? There is a possibility I may be able to pick one up, but I am wondering about IQ, CA, and all that stuff. Also any info on the $ value of the lens would be appreciated too.

The SPLOSdb rates the M as excellent. It is the highest rated Pentax 28. The K is rated as Very good.

Thanks Alan, for the information and the link as well. According to B. Dimitrov's site, the M and the A versions share the exact same specs. They even look the same. If anybody out there has any info on the A 28 F2.0, I'd be glad to get that info too.

I own the Pentax SMC-A 28mm f2. I bought it new nearly 20 years ago. It was a "close-out" sale as many of the older A lenses were replaced by F lenses.

Build quality is excellent with an all-metal body and aperture ring (not plastic like some A lenses) and engraved instead of painted-on markings for distance and f stop. It is a little gem with quality to match the Limited lenses.

Image quality is very good. It is usable wide open but, of course, it get sharper when stopped down to f/5.6 to f/8. It is very consistent in image quality from center to corners with very little light fall-off at the edges (even on a film camera). There is a small amount of barrel distortion that is slightly visible in some scenes, but it is not really an issue. Compared to my wife's Pentax SMC-F 28mm f/2.8, the image quality and distortion are pretty much identical. The only issue is a slightly greater tendency to flare when the sun hits the front element.

Be sure to get a good lens hood and use it all the time. I have the original Pentax lens hood (a rectangular plastic clip-on 49mm hood) but prefer an after-market hood from B&H made by Hama that is somewhat deeper and includes a handy rectangular cap that clips on the front of hood.

Thank you Gary for all the great info. I am a dedicated hood user. I prefer hoods to protect the front elements instead of filters. If I'm able to get the lens I'll be sure to look into the B&H product.
