Whats Ploland?

To Zoom or to Prime? That's the question!

A: To prime of course

It's not really wide enough anyway but I'd really prefer the walk in the Ploland's high mountains carrying this one instead of my Sig 28-70 f2.8 zoom

I'll get one to accompany my soon owned K-5 (as soon as I can find a buyer for my K-7)

Omega_Leader, I understand that Pentax is trying to appeal to the people who just bought a new camera and have only the kit zoom, I just think its a bad move on their part to alienate people who want faster glass.

People like I want to expand their photography but can't necessarily afford the FA 31mm. One glance at the competitors catalog shows that it is possible to deliver a 35mm f2 in my price range.

This argument has been proposed many times 'a 35mm f1.8-2 would hurt sales of the 31mm limited' but I think that's rubbish. I think pentax did poor market segmentation here. There is something really high end, and there's something at the other end of the spectrum, and the middle has been ignored.

Anyway, there are plenty of other lenses in the Pentax lineup that appeal to me. I am saving for a 50-135. New bodies don't excite me much. I still shoot with an *ist D, and don't plan to upgrade this year (6 mega pixels is enough for me), but new glass is always exciting.

If the 35 2.4 is 80% as good as the FA 35mm f/2, it will be a hit. I am very happy with the Fa 35mm f/2. Now it is getting very expensive and this will be a great alternative. The variety of colors will be good for those who have or planning to have a colored cameras.

Plastic mount lens is strictly for entry level users and extremely budget conscious.

It actually goes against the whole ruggedly durable Pentax reputation. Pentax is the knock-about
get-mud-on-your-camera specialist.

The plastic mount is the ultimate deal-breaker. It can only be described as "dainty," even weather sealed.

It may be a great, and ultimately useful lens, but it's also a tender, fragile "please don't bump me" lens.
Plain facts.

lol.

I think the plastic will be wery strong. I bet it will be made of high quality durable plastic. Plastic is good against bumps too. I don't think the mount will break before the elements or anything else in a bump or what ever.

From my perspective, DA35 2.4 is addition to the kit zoom. You can choose to buy body with zoom or fix. This lens is like cheap 50 2.0 on old FF camera.

I am rough, and clumsy, and I torture my kit. So, the plastic mount is a factor for me and others. Plus you attach and reattach a plastic mount lens a thousand times. There is no data or evidence for this in terms of durability. Plastic will start to shave off eventually and it could end up in the camera.

Metal mounts have been around a long time. They were engineered that way for a reason.

For me $200. is a LOT of money. I am not a rich. I can buy several used metal manual lenses for that instead, and I will.

Just my 2 cents worth on the topic...but my office has dozens of DSLRs, canon, nikon, you name it....and more lenses than you can count...many with plastic mounts. They do just fine...and we are really hard on our equipment. We drop em, splash junk on em, kick em, you name it, we've done it.

Bottom line: don't avoid the da-l 35 just because its a going to be a plastic mount. Wait and see.......

Well, if plastic's so wonderful why don't all lenses have it? Same goes for the camera flanges. The MZ-M had a plastic flange. It was not a pretty sight.

Plastic mount have been around for many years. The FA-J series comes to mind....and same topic was discussed over on the other forum a few months back....the DA-L 35 is going to be a budget lens...one shouldn't expect build quality to be comparable to say the FA 31 or 77. This is a sub $200 lens....what does one expect? Pentax still has to turn a profit with this...

Wait till the lens comes out...then we'll see...

k-x and kit lenses with plastic mounts: Pentax SLR Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review
No one has been expecting it to have the build quality of the FA 31 or 77 ltd. We do expect it to be at least as well built as the FA 35/2 or FA 50/1.4 and as good or better optically. Like it or not, the FA 35/2 is going to be the bench mark for this lens. The FA-J series isn't actually something to aspire to.

BTW: Screw Dipreview forums. I don't look at anything beyond the actual reviews there.

What is so surprising?
Even the K10D and K20D has plastic on the inside. Have you seen the bayonet mount of a K10D ripped off from the body? I have... and you will be pleased to discover the bayonet screws go into... yeah, err... plastic.
