17-70mm: Pentax or Sigma?

I had decided a couple of weeks ago that I really wasn't happy with the results I was getting from my Tamron 18-200 zoom. After many, many hours on this forum and multiple others, I chose to go with a Sigma 17-70mm 2.8-4.5 DC Macro (NOT the newer model with OS). Of course after deciding, I have been unable to locate a new OR used model! (I do have one on backorder from Adorama, but it's been almost 2 weeks!) I have found new and used versions of the Pentax SDM 17-70 f4, however.

So...are there big differences between these two? Or are they twins with different labels?

Anyone?

Thanks,
The REAL K-R!!

The Sigma is cheaper, faster at the wider end, and rated higher, so I'd go for it over the Pentax (which is also SDM-only, unfortunately).

On other hand Sigma 17-70 quality can be a bit patchy. Recently bought one and had to send it back for repair or replacement due to focussing issues (my other lenses focus fine so is definitely the lense).

If possible try out the lense before you buy.

I can't comment on Sigma 17-70 vs Pentax 17-70. I bought the Sigma 17-70 OS HSM because it was faster. My experience is that the optical quality is excellent, it focuses quickly and the OS works well. It was a really good buy.

Sigma 17-70 OS

Thanks for your replies!
Wouldn't buying the Sigma 17-70 with the OS be overkill as far as stabilization?

Would the built-in SR in the K7 be overridden when an OS lens is attached?

AND if I could choose between the lens OS or the body SR, which works best?
(can the OS on the lens be turned off instead?)

Thanks again!

I'm not sure which is better, but as I understand it, you have to pick one or the other - otherwise, it'll just be a shaky mess if they both try to correct it.

The two lenses are not twins. The Pentax is based on a cooperative effort with Tokin, not Sigma.

FWIW, I've owned the Pentax for more than a year, and it has performed flawlessly. If I could only have one of my lenses for a DSLR (scary thought), this would be it.

According to a couple of reviews I have seen the in Sigmas in lense OS seems to be a bit better (typically by 1/2 to 1 stop) than K-x body SR (and guessing K7).
However as the others have said you can NOT have both on at the same time. You must remember to turn off the body SR (or lense OS if you like) which sounds like something that would catch me out sometimes (given that I seem to fall into every trap known!).
