Function of plate beside diaphragm actuator?

I'm considering buying a K-series 135mm F2.5 lens.

The only problem with the lens is that the "plate" beside the diaphragm actuator is broken.

Is this plate only for protection of the diaphragm actuator or does it serve some other function?

Broken plate besides Diaphragm actuator

Hello... I see that no one has replied to you... After 6 yrs... I have similar problem. Recently I purchased SMC Pentax 28mm f/2.8 lens from *bay.in and realized that the plate besides the diaphragm actuator is broken. Now I don;t know the purpose of the that plate. I guess, it helps keeping Diaphragm actuator from accidental bending when dropped or something.
If you have got your answer please do enlighten me too because I am pondering if I should return the lens or keep it. It got it for INR Rupees 3200 ($51.82)...

It merely shields the actuator. If there's no damage to the lens you have no concerns other than to keep it safe from harm. In some cases you can cannibalize the part from another (broken/unwanted lens).
