It is a K-mount to filter thread that I am currently using. I only have a Tamron 70-300 zoom that I could maybe put the 50 on the end of, but im not sure how well that would work, and I'll need to buy a step up ring so the 49mm 50 would fit the 72mm thread of the Tamron. I think for now I may just stick with a 2x converter as that seems to be the most universally recommended on here. Then eventually I'll pick up a dedicated macro, probably new and with the auto stuff, but that is after I get the other 3 lenses I am currently preoccupied with. Good glass ain't cheap... Thanks for all the help though guys, that 2x aught to hold me over till I can get a dedicated macro.

I recommend this:
Sigma 50mm f2.8 Macro Lens Reviews - Pentax Third-Party Lens Review Database
And this (coupled with any K-mount 50-55mm prime):
Vivitar 2X Macro-Focusing Teleconvertor Lens Reviews - Pentax Third-Party Lens Review Database
Both can be found for $50-$75 in online auctions.
Cheers!

Who posted that converter in the data base? "However, it does not permit use of the "A" function." when clearly the picture show that it has A contacts.
This Vivitar converter is the same as the Kenko I mentioned above. Kenko made them all. I still have the broshures from the 80's. They exist both with and without A contacts. Expect to pay twice the price for those with A contacts.

I have 3 macro set-ups. The most expensive was the first bought in 1986 and consists of an SMC-M 100 F4 and a set of auto extension tubes. Lens was used for 150 and extension tubes were 75. I don't know that this would cost today. Second set is a modified miranda bellows with a 135 mm enlarging lens total cost about 130

Cheapest is an SmC tak 50mm F4 macro with extension tubes and a focusing helix for about 110.

All are capable of better than 1:1 and I doubt you would find anything cheaper that can do 1:1
