I bought the K-x 2 lens kit (55-300mm) in July and 3 weeks or so ago I bought my first additional lens, a Pentax DA 18-250mm. Said to be the most versatile lens you can get and it's discontinued, so I figured I would add it first.

My first lens was an A 50/2, as with hundreds of thousands of other people: it was included with my K1000. :-) My next two lenses were also "included", a DA 18-55 (v. I) and a DA 50-200. I no longer have any of those three first lenses.

My first separately purchased lens was an A 28/2.8, and then I was given an A 50/1.7 and a DA 40/2.8. My next purchase was an FA 28/2.8 So I suppose 28 and 40 are my two favorite focal lengths, so far . . .

My first lens in 1987 was a Canon EF 50/1.8, now referred to as the Mark I edition. When I switched to Pentax a couple of years ago it was for small primes with image stabilization (on the sensor) so I got two DA Ltds: the 21 & 70 as I knew those were the two focal lengths I most wanted. The DA15 didn't exist then but if doing over today I'd get: DA15, DA70 and either DA35 or 40 depending on my priority of compact size vs. close focus. I own both and still couldn't tell you which one I'd keep if I had to part with one of them. That's why I now own and love all the DA Ltds!

My first SLR lenses must have been the M35 2.8 and the M100 2.8 together with a chrome MX around 1976-77, still have them.

Hi all,

As someone about to take their first steps out of kit lens territory and into the vast (and expensive) world of fine glass, I am curious what was the very first lens you bought and why you decided that was the lens you had to have?
First non-kit lens was a 28mm prime to go on my Canon AE-1.

First non-kit Pentax lens was an F35-80. I wanted something longer than the 18-35 that came with the *istD. After that purchase I had two iffy zooms instead of one. That was at the beginning of my learning curve. Neither of them were as bad, though, as the cheapo Sigma 18-50 which I see is still offered for sale. With that I had three iffy zoom lenses. They're still wasting dry-box space ...

An 8mm f/2.8?!?!?!? That must be the rarest of Asahi glass! Cherish it!

Pentax A 28mm 2.8.

Normal field of view on ASP-C, a stop faster than the kit and sharp corner to corner.

Not one of the greats, but a very good first prime. If I could do it again, I would have just bought a 50 1.7 or the 55 1.8, as I think they are better IQ wise. At the time, though, I was very into wide angle lenses.

The first lens of my very own was a Komine Vivitar 28/2.8 in Canon FD mount, Eventually the camera it was for was actually given to me along with the FL 50 1.8.

I got the 18-55 kit lens bundle, but my first separate lens purchase was the M 50/1.7. After that was the DA 50-200, which has worked very well in soccer photography and my recent trip to Niagara Falls.

Lol... many people's 1st lens was just like yours, the kit.

I didn't buy a kit. I bought the K10D body and the well respected and venerable Tamron 28-75/2.8. I'll never get rid of it.

My guess is it was a typo and he meant to write 28

My first lens was the Rokkor-X 50mm f/2.0 prime that came with my Minolta SRT-200 film SLR in the mid 1970s. The camera was 100 percent manual... only a battery for the built-in light meter. I still own the Minolta and lens.
