The war has begun! 300mm vs 500mm

Hi,

It was a matter of time before these 2 took a fight!
On one side the DA L 55-300: Modern, sleek, excellent optical quality and resolution.
On the other side: the SEIMAR 500mm f8: old, screwmount, big, heavy, cheap lens, but with the muscle of 500mm focal lenght.

I know these are two very different beasts and it is not even fair to compare them, but what the heck!

The Moon was beautiful and the skies were clear for a few minutes, so these two went out and shot a few rounds.

DA L 55-300mm No crop

SEIMAR 500mm No crop

How about 100% crop:

DA L 55-300 100% crop

SEIMAR 500mm f8 100% crop

Conditions were not exactly identical either.

Camera: Pentax K100D Super
Minor post process in CS5 (about equal sharpening on both)

Lens:-----55-300mm----500mm

shutter spd:---1/80s---1/20s

aperture:-----f8--------f11

tripod:--------yes-------yes

2 sec delay
Mirror
Lock up:------yes------yes

wire
remote:-------no------yes

ISO:----------200-----200

The 300 has the resolution, the 500 has the muscle

Conclusion: I'm having FUN!
Verdict: Absolutely NONE!

What do you think?

Thanks,

With your conclusion and verdict..................................................................

Well, I think you should be let loose on loads more lens testing/comparison web sites and magazines.

Perhaps it would bring a few smiles to others as you did to me, keep up the good work.

You didn't use the wired remote with the 55-300?

That Completely blows your test..

(just in case you didn't get it)

The best conclusion I've seen yet in any of these compare tests. Both are decent shots.

I wonder why you need remote if you use 2 second delay and mirror up?

Hi,

With the 500mm just touching the camera creates some vibration and wobbling that takes more than 2 seconds to settle. The 12 second delay does not include mirror lock up so using the remote is the best approach. Not sure but I think SR is disabled with the MLU timer.

Thanks!

SR is disabled in Several modes especially those where Pentax assumes you'll be using a tripod. This has been true for quite some time.

I use something a little longer for Moon shots, a Vivitar 600-1000 mm f9 point something and at 600mm, with a fast enough shutter speed (will require some processing) can get it hand held (with the K7).
