Hood for M40 pancake

I'm looking for a hood for my recently acquired M40 pancake. I found a couple of 43mm rubber hoods and that's probably going to be a decent bet but I'm wondering if there are any other options that would work like the DA40 hood. I've also got to grab a lens cap since it didn't come with one. All suggestions appreciated..

Step down filter rings would work well to emulate the DA 40 lens hood.

Maybe it was a typo, but I think the M40 has a 49mm filter thread, not a 43. So if you used a 49mm to 49-37mm step down ring, along with a 37-30.5 step down ring, it would function like the DA 40 hood. Then get a 30.5mm snap on cap for that (or a film canister lid). You should be able toi find all of this stuff pretty cheaply.

Here's a thread where S0ldbear shows some pics of hoods he's made from step-down rings:

I've you're willing to pay $40, you can just buy the hood: Amazon.com: Pentax Lens Hood MH-RC 49mm for the PENTAX DA 40mm F2.8 Digital SLR Lens: Camera & Photo

Mine came with a 43mm CP on it which I'm basically using as a cap for now. Maybe it will work with both sizes, I'll have to double check. Either way I'll check into that, it looks like a good system.

A 43mm CP won't screw into the DA 40mm. I think you're already using the hood. Does it say MH-RC49mm on the front?

Not a DA, M40... Doesn't say a diameter IIRC, but the filter that is on it says 43mm..

Edit: The review section says 49mm so I'm going to try one of my 49mm filters tonight. There is an inner and outer ring on the lens. Maybe you can use both.

Sorry, I'd dlelete my post if I could. I don't know anything about the M40. I like the filter rings idea, it's a lot more compact than a rubber hood.

I are an idiot or I have bad eyesight. There is no 49mm marking on the lens itself. There was one on the filter. The paint on the filter was scratched so that the 9 looked like a 3 until I looked very closely;-) It is indeed a 49mm thread, which is great since I already have a hood for 49mm, all I need is a spare cap which I can get from dealextreme etc.

Thanks again. I R AN 1D10T!!
