FA 28-70mm/4 AL v. 18-55mm DAL

I recently opted for a K-x in favor of the K-7 and wanted to compare the std zoom included with the K-x (it was cheaper to buy with lens than body only!).
Well I'm pretty impressed with the much discussed 'kit' DAL lens but I have to say my old FA 28-70 beats it for IQ.

I'm noticing more Chrom Abbrev at the wider angles for the 18-55 DAL and I'm seeing a slight increase in sharpness for FA 28-70. I know the FA doesn't go as wide, but even at comparable mild wide angles my old FA is more than holding it's own in comparison.

There is zero vignetting on an APS-C for the full frame designed FA which is an added bonus along with F4 at all focal lengths.

Has anyone else compared these two lens for IQ?

I don't see any direct comparisons. Maybe I'm not searching accurately

The FA 28-70/4 has better IQ for the most part. It gives a very different look, more natural and less saturated. But it has a different function, really, better for people but much less wide.

when I don't use primes the FA 28-70 is what I go to in most cases and I'll have to agree with your conclusions. the FA is a terrific small zoom that beats the kit for sharpness and also has nicer rendering to it imo. the focal lenght range suits me better than the kit zoom for my needs, I just wish it had a bayonet hood to complement it.

Yes, I can't quite put my finger on it, but the FA seems to render a more natural image. I don't know if it's the contrast, saturation or more even spread of sharpness, but either way it looks fabulous in my eyes.

I think this will be at least a backup keeper when Pentax eventually goes full frame digital.

from the photos that I have seen, the FA is better than the kitlens. also I like it's focal length coverages as opposed to the kit-lens wider side. not to mention that it is FF and has an aperture ring. the images are of natural look and sharper and a bit contrasty. although there are QC issues which makes it quite a risk.

I never liked the kitlens at it's wider end and had mostly used it from 24mm-40mm. so it's almost useless if I cant use it fully as a zoom from wide end to long end. I'd be better off with single primes if that were the case.
