SLR Gear 43mm f/1.9 Review

Did you guys see it yet?

Edit: Ugh, fingers typed too fast. The 43mm f/1.9 LTD review, is what I meant to say.

Sigh.

Thank you for the link.

Overall an ok hands-on review, but I noticed a few issues.

"The original, silver version of the lens is made in Japan but newer (black) models are now assembled in Vietnam; this does not seem to have affected quality in the slightest."

The above statement is misleading, as there were older Black versions MIJ Japan as well.

Also, I am not sure Pentax calls the FA43 a pancake lens though?, but it is a very small lens indeed.

He owns a K-7 and a K-x and hadn't looked at the FA43 lab tests??, now that is some self-control over LBA

Then I disagree with one of the concluding statments:
"This is quite a price to pay for a prime lens that doesn't seem to have any real stand-out strength, other than its physical characteristics and tack-sharp images"

WHAT!.....Better than Zeiss like contrast, sharp as hell and nothing special about it?

P.S: I am not too sure what this means?

"•No use of Manual Aperture control on digital bodies (K7 and K-x tested)"

Is he saying the aperture ring doesn't work on the K-7/K-x?

Kinda hard to put much faith in this guys review. Too many odd opinions and just plain wrong statements. Why does he even do reviews when he is so misinformed and sorta clueless? Plus, any review of the 43 LTD should, IMO, include the Leica connection. That's a pretty unique little factoid.

Yeah, I think that's what he's saying.

So another CON for this lens could be "I don't know how to use my camera!"

On the other hand, save the CA which doesn't bother me with my sample, I'd agree with the review in general. I would have loved it to focus a bit closer, and the bokeh can be bettered. But the contrast and sharpness, and flare resistance, and color, etc etc make this an excellent lens. The softness wide open to my way of seeing is a positive rather than a negative.

The 43 does amazing things with stone - and to do this a lens must be able to resolve gradations and tones extremely well. Many otherwise 'sharp' lenses don't do stone well.

I have only one complaint about the 43mm, it is not an excellent focal length.

I did have a quick look at that review. He does seem to be a bit all over the place. He did get couple of things right: the CAs are worse than say DA40, the OOF can get bit nervous and yes, it could focus few cms closer. But: it's soft wide open? I don't think he managed to focus it well at f1.9. I've been through 20 odd lenses over past 2years and 43 @1.9 is one of the sharpest wide open performances I've come across! There is nothing special? I don't think he heard of Pixie dust I don't think he realises how rare are lenses made of metal and finished off like FA ltds, and I don't think he has compared 43's rendering with anything, otherwise he would have seen just how special this little thing is. Also misleading unknowing folks in the MIJ & AIV versions and failing to mention SMC FA43 Special-L (yes, the Leica version) is a major offence. All in all hopeless review that doesn't do justice to the real thing IMO.
