55-300 Disaster

Had a bit of a disaster with my SMC-DA 55-300 tonight. Tripod tipped over, taking the lens and my K-7 with it. K-7 is fine, but I'm pretty sure the lens is toast.

Anyways, if I can't get it fixed, I guess I'll have to replace it. I'm wondering if the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 might be a better buy (I don't mind losing the 50-77 range). I was never thrilled with the sharpness of the SMC-DA, and I LOVE the one Sigma I do have (17-70).

Anybody have any suggestions?

The DAL55-300 can be found used for about $200. That's what I sold mine for, and what I bought it for too.

It blows my mind how cheap the DAL is compared to the DA. The difference isn't *that* bad, so long as you don't use quickshift and you aren't an ape with the mount. You can use your old hood, too.

The DAL is in a different class than the Sigma 70-300.

Agreed on all points. The 55-300 is a steal in any form IMHO.

Yes, you can buy the cheaper DAL version of the 55-300. same optics, slightly different features. personally, the Pentax is just a step above the Tamron and Sigma. unless you really need the quick-shift, then you need to pay extra.

Am I blind? Why can't I find the DAL55-300 on B&H?

From what I know, you can't buy the DAL 55-300 new. It comes only in a kit. When I got mine, no one was selling it here on the forums, so I ended up finding it at Willoghby's open box on Amazon.

I also agree, the 55-300 is considerably sharper and offers better IQ than the 70-300s of any brand.
If you weren't thrilled about the 55-300, then you may want to go to the next step with a hunk of a lens like the 50-135 or a 70-200 with TC (and spend a whole lot more for speed that you may not need )

There are a couple DAL available new, but not from B&H, etc. ...
