Well I'm waiting to try out this lens recommended by a friend - the Mitakon 85mm f/2
Cheap and good, works like an M lens and image quality is really good, though the build quality is a little rough. Said to better the Nikkor 85mm f/2 AiS!!!

The problem with the Jupiter is to figure out which one is good. Are the blacks better than the silver ones?

Which one do you have Pentaxor? Could you post a pictures of it?

Even in the black ones you have 2 or 3 different design.

Is focusing easy for the Jupiter 9?

When you say not sharp, what do you mean? Is it at least as sharp as the kit lens?

Really Pentaxor, thank you for all of your comments, you are helping me a lot.

I have a prime gap between A 50 mm F1.4 and M 135 F3.5 (and maybe soon upgrade to A 135 F2.8 ), so also looking for a ~85 prime.
- What are typically applications for this focal length that are less easy to cover with 50 or 135 mm lens?

The 85 lens are usually made for portraiture, some allow to do some good close up too.
They are usually fast lens with a minimum aperture of f1.4-2.8.
The bokeh is usually really good as well.

Those are the reasons I'm looking for one.

I had a 50mm that I never used, I sold it and hoping to replace it with a 85mm which it the best focal lens for portraiture. Good portraiture focal lens is between 75 to 90. Of course this is an average value, but it put you at a goo distance between the subject and yourself. You don't have to yell to talk with them and you are not in their face while taking the picture.

Did this 75 to 90 mm also change by a factor 1.5 with the introduction of APC-s DSLRs?

I think it should...in this case it would be 50-60mm.

Though, those lens with that focal lens (75-90) are still used for portraiture. Remember that this value is a reference, you need to find the one you would like the most. Some people are using Macro lens to do the job and they are between 90-105mm ( for the 1:1 macro) with adding the x1.5 crop factor.

it cuts your FOV and working distance by a significant degree. unless you are doing exclusive headshots.

I'm not sure which ones are better since I'm pretty happy with my copy.

I have the black finish but one of the earlier batch circa 70s (non-MC), single-coated, so light transmission is pretty much affected by flaring and would require a good hood for optimal IQ. the body is different from the newer J-9s.

what I meant by not of great sharpness, it is comparison with other better 85mm, per se A*85, M85, FA*85 which are sharper. so I'm not saying that it's not sharp but not as sharp than the better ones. although this gets better and as sharp at lower apertures. f2.8 is very good sharpness and f4 can pack a punch. f5.6 is where it somehow equalizes with the others (best performance at f4 and f5.6). it is of better sharpness in comparison with the Rokinon.

what kit lens were you referring to? but anyway, I'm not impressed with the kitlens, so I dont think it's necessary to even compare it with.

focusing is easy and IQ can still pack a punch with today's standards. not bad for a 30+ year old lens.

also, I can provide you some pictures, but probably tomorrow since I'm kinda busy. it focuses much closer than the M85. it shows it's MFD at 80cm but I think it focuses much even closer, perhaps at 77-78cm (there is an allowance left in the focusing scale adjustment). glad to be of help.

I guess I don't need the pictures if you could identify which one you have, is it the same one than Hinman?
Check here: Hin's Tech Corner: Jupiter 9 85mm f/2.0 Test Shots

Here are the 2 black models I have seen:
- JUPITER-9 2 85 lens M39 M42 Export edition Zenit 7239 - eBay (item 320601312174 end time Nov-08-10 06:34:14 PST)
- JUPITER-9 2 85 Russian Lens screw M42 0214 - eBay (item 320601254917 end time Nov-08-10 03:24:14 PST)

The kit lens, I was talking is the 18-55, which I don't have anymore, but your description should work. Anyhow, a portrait lens shouldn't be extra sharp. I do link the rendering of the Jupiter lens.

Do you might me asking where you bought yours?
The ones on ebay seems to take a very long time to come here.

Looking at Hinman review and your view on your Jupiter 9, it looks like those 2 black version are good. I guess the one of hinman has MC on it, but so can yours.

I hope you can enjoy your weekend with me asking all of those questions.

got mine locally. I'm not sure what hinman has since it looks different from mine. but Hinman mentioned it has no coating so it's not an MC. I'm not even sure if my copy is coated since the glass seems free of any indication that it is coated (MC or single). but anyways, atleast it works for my use. just try to avoid those flares as they can really be a problem. I have no idea with the ones that are sold on eBay. never bought a J9 from them yet.

as far as enjoying my weekend, when I'm doing other things, I would be off for a while.
