Would a A 50 mm F1.4 x 1.7 AF TC look terrible compared to dedicated 85 mm lens?
- Hmm, probably should do a search on the 1.7x AF TC icw 50 mm F1.4...

I used to have a 1.7 TC but end up selling it. With the TC you are also going to loose speed.

I've used some of the lenses mentioned, I'll take a second look at Vivitar every time. Just got a Rokinon 75-300, liking it pretty well so far, but I've only used it a little, M42 adapter got here yesterday. Already got some decent shots though, and I'm not really comfortable with the lens yet, so I think it will work out well. Also have had a Rokinon tele convertor for a long time, it seems pretty good. One of my Minolta (35mm) lenses is/was a Rokinon, it did a good job. I don't use it any more, but only because I gave up film and Minolta shut down their digital camera operations. I really wish they hadn't, Minolta/Pentax would have been a really tough decision...while Pentax/Nikon/Canon was a no brainer...

Look around some, no telling what you may find. Makinon, Tamron and Sigma all make good lenses, I've used all of those but Sigma, and others do well too. My Makinon 135 got me some pictures good enough for contest entries several times. The Rokinon for the Minolta did too. Name brands aren't everything...I play several off brand guitars, lots cheaper than Gibson or Fender, but play and sound good. Cameras are the same...

depends on the kind of lens you are going to use it with. and also, the higher the magnification, the higher the IQ loss would be. 1.4x will have more IQ retention than 1.7x than 2x. also the type of TC should also be taken into consideration. some TCs are better than the others. some are corrected for deficiencies like distortions, CA, loss of IQ by adding or constructing additional elements and coatings in a way that will avoid or minimize such degradation.

Macros and other lenses with a superb resolving power will be able to cope up with a TCs shortcomings and will retain much more IQ. a 50/1.4 will quite suffer higher especially at wide open.

the Sigma 70, Tokina,Tamron,Vivitar 90s, Samyang 85, Helios 85, Jupiter 9 are pretty impressive with regards to their 85mm use respectively. the Makinon looks promising as well and for a lens that only cost around $100, I'd say not bad.

Did anyone ever order from this seller on eBay?
SMC PENTAX-M 85mm f2 LENS/LX/MX/K1000/USED/AS IS/$1 - eBay (item 230534195068 end time Oct-11-10 09:51:42 PDT)

He said the lens works good but when you look at the warranty, it says sold for parts only. I have contact the seller twice without any response. Is it worth it to give it a shot?

If I don't get that lens, I will go ahead and get a rokinon.
Did you get that, it went for nice price. I wish I could have seen this earlier.

No I didn't since the description of the lens wasn't clear (first saying it works good, then saying he's selling for parts only) and also he never replied to my emails. But yes, I did watch it and it went for a really good price.

Just bought the M85 from someone in this forum. Spend a bit more than I would have liked, but it seems to be a great condition. I'll let you know when I'll get it!

Thank you for all of your help.
