43 Is Just Right

I saw a few comments about folks not being comfortable with the 43mm focal length. Of course, this is totally a matter of preference. I too was "worried" that 43mm would be weird somehow, neither long nor wide. I have a tendency to shoot at the shorter lengths and enjoy wide FOVs. But recently I traded a DA 35mm 2.8 macro for a nice copy of the FA43 ... and honestly, I never looked back.

The 35 was a truly nice lens for all the reason you can find here on the site.... but man, the view on the 43mm is truly just right... it's "normal" as far as I am concerned, since when I lift the viewfinder to my eye, I'm seeing what my brain was just looking at. The view is "correct" for me, much more than the 35mm ever was.

That, on top of the "pixie dust" quality of the images, makes this a lens that stays on my camera most of the time. Really wonderful lens, and shouldn't be considered the "also ran" behind the FA31 and the FA77.

Great glass, as shown by the images posted in this thread.

I tend to agree. I prefer the 43 as a "normal" lens over any other and it accounts for a pretty high percentage of my shots. It always seems to be "just right" for indoor shots. I keep thinking I want the 31 to complete the set, but do I really?

Yeah, I do. But I've read from a lot of folks that have both and end up using one or the other disproportionately, no doubt as a result of them being pretty close in FL and both being infused with pixie dust. The 31 represents a major investment if I may end up using the 43 more, anyway. Though, on a side note, I think the 31 is the absolute sexiest looking lens you can put on a Pentax camera. I don't particularly like big lenses and I know I'm in the minority, but I hate the way the pancakes look when mounted. The 31 looks just right, and has all the right markings, if you know what I'm sayin', and I think ya do!

Simon, that is an absolutely brilliant result and a stunning shot.

The 31 ltd is a fantastic lens too, of course, it's not the most pricey FA ltd for nothing.
It is, nevertheless, more a WA lens (on a 35mm camera) but useful on a crop sensor for wide portraiture and some landscapes - and is a significantly larger and heavier lens than the 43 ltd, which is indeed perfect for street and portrait photography.

The FA43 was the last one I purchased of the 3 amigos... I now however rate it as the best of the 3.

The FA31 is special as well and I would not do without it

cheers

I prefer the 43 - its right between the 31 and the 50 - you will get similar FOV as a normal human eye.

OK, you talented photographers have finally convinced me that my next Limited lens must be the FA43. I've used my 35macro for general shooting but its not quite right, whereas for macro, of course, its perfect. So, 43Ltd here I come. (And then, will it be the 70, or the 77...hmmm a new thread, methinks)

And to think I once bought an 18-250 because I didn't want to go through the fuss of having to change lenses. How foolish was I???

I once felt the same way.

If the situation permits it I will take with me my K-5 with say the 31 or 43 or even my much loved DA15 on it and have my K-7 fitted with my 16-50*. Its a heavy load and as said I only do this if the situation permits it

cheers

Thanks, Ash, I knew I could rely on you :P I did actually go searching for similar threads, lots are quite old, but still very useful. Sadly I have been unable to decide at this stage so I guess I will just have to pull the trigger on that FA43 while I think about it.
[edit] Actually, I'm stuck. Reality of financial situation says get the DA 21, 40 and 70. Observation of proliferation of pixie dust says get FA43 and 77. So right now, doing nothing. Setting about selling things instead.

That was the final nail in my wallet, too. I wasn't going to. I shouldn't have. I can't take it with me. Just pulled the trigger at B&H and finally remembered to use the proper link.
