I would like to see exactly how fast the AF is in real life... Can anyone provide me with a little better understanding? Because if it's as slow as my DA* (which isn't sluggish, but you know what I mean) then I don't think I could get by with that.
Focus clutch system is mechanically good, but practically a little more fiddly since you have to both switch the lens and camera body focusing modes to M.

But as for AF speed, it's a winner IMO:

Thanks Ash! Hmm, it seems that Tamrons AF is decent... Can you comment (since you've had both the Sigma and Tamron) about the difference of AF speed between the two? Because I'm familiar with the speed of Sigma HSM, but I have no hands-on with Tamron.

I'm considering this: order the Sigma from BH and if it doesn't give good IQ for what I need (I hear FF is a bad issue too) then I'll return it and get the Tamron. But see, there always is the possibility that I could get a winner Sigma... I kind of doubt it though, but at least I'd know then.

To make one thing clear. The switch between AF and MF is not a problem like some sites make it out to be. Just set the clutch on the lens to MF all of the time and switch it on the body like every other lens. No it's not full time override nor as elegant as Quick-Shift, but it works. I wouldn't be concerned with the sticky aperture as it comes with a hell of a warranty, and hasn't been heard about in quite a while from what I can tell. The only thing that had me considering the Sigma was the quietness of HSM (which has had some problems of it's own, but not enough to detract me) vs. screwdrive, and that the Sigma does have a longer focus throw compared to the Tammy (140 degrees vs. 80 degrees). In the end, it was the perceived win in IQ and a slightly lower price tag that had me choose the Tammy. But you won't go wrong with either.

No, I called Sigma and they said that it's still in production...

What I would like is the Tammy's IQ with Siggy's AF...
Hi again,

The Sigma was out of stock for a while (I waited for it to come back - don't know why Adorama doesn't have it, but it is in stock at BH):

Sigma 70-200

Regarding IQ, since you have neither, I think you're basing your thoughts on reported IQ (dpreviews and others) but if 'quick shift' is important, you don't have a choice! It's the Sigma. I'm quite happy with the IQ of my Sigma. Analysis paralysis! Either will probably do a great job for you.

FWIW, so one lens is soft at the long end, one is better here, etc etc- I wish the manufacturers would forego (their) perceived need for a "Macro" in these lenses and just concentrate on good IQ through the normal use of a 70-200 focal range. If I really want macro, I'll use a dedicated macro lens. Never understood this...
P.S. Thanks for that tip Jodokast!

Well I'd gone through some of these issues (macro and Sigma IQ) in other threads:

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/72242-sigma-70...lity-test.html
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/69207-request-...0-f-2-8-a.html

Just found Tamron better optically, and AF speed was not noticeably different. I agree though that the macro features do leave a lot to be desired. But it at least allows for a subject a little closer than what was possible with the old pre-HSM versions.
