I haven't owned the DA 35 but I would guess it has a shorter focus throw than the Sigma even with the limiter. Thats the reason you are experiencing this with autofocus.

I would say practice your manual skills if you are new to doing macro as other have suggested. And big part of it is getting enough light.

Autofocus is tough with any of these lenses, because it is likely that you will end up with the wings in focus and the eyes completely out of focus. The DA 35 doesn't really have a short focus throw, but it is quite fast due to less glass for the focus motor to move and so I think it gets where it is going quicker than a longer focal length lens would.
