Done it! Thanks for everyone's thoughts and advice.

I've just bought myself a DA 55-300mm f4-5.8ED and the Sigma 10-20mm f3.5. Looking forward to trying them out tomorrow when it's light... and not persisting it down!

also consider the 16-45mm. it gives 80-90% of the imagine quality vs. the 16-50mm, but at more than half its cost.

I bought a DA 50-200 WR fairly recently for 109 and wouldn't really want to pay too much more for it (but then I'm not particularly interested in the WR), since it's fairly soft at the wider end (quite good at the longer end though). My impression is that this lens suffers more than most from production variability (i.e. manufacturing quality issues), so to be able to get a DA55-300 for a few pounds more, well it would be a no-brainer for me (who cares if it's a DAL?).

Regarding the wider FLs, take a look here (to give you an idea of what can be bought - in comparison with the DA18-55 - for a reasonable price):

Just jump straight to the conclusions if you want to avoid the technical stuff...

Fat chance of that! This little lot cost over 700, so that's my xmas prezzies sorted... well, that's what my dear wife said!

So I have the 10-20mm, 18-55mm and the 55-300mm, this little collection should keep me happy with the kind of pics I want to take.

The only other expenses I can foresee are the remote control and a flash gun... but those aren't important just yet!

Oops, sorry, I didn't spot that you'd already made a purchase! Mind you, I'm sure you've done the right thing regarding the 50-200/55-300 decision.

Congratulations anyway, and have fun with your new lenses!

A lot of good 50-200mm and 55-300mm discussion. I'm in a similar spot as Damian upgrading from a Fuji S5100 (37-370mm equivalent). but I rarely ever used the longer portion of the zoom possibly because I didn't use a tripod...

I see a one point difference in ratings between the two (50-200mm and 55-300mm) and not sure if the positives outweigh the negatives (cost, weight and length). My question is how big of a difference is there in the 80-200mm range. I'm still undecided what my shorter length lenses will be but I am decided on the A 50mm f1.7 (or 1.4). I was considering a 100mm or 135mm M lens but good ones aren't significantly cheaper nor lighter (although shorter) than the 50-200mm. For me at least it seems that the 50-200mm is better for me than the 55-300mm or the older primes. Is there anything that I am missing? Does a M 100mm (one example) have significantly better IQ that it makes up for not having the add'l zoom range (and not having AF and the metering work)?

Usage will be travel (SE Asia and the Himalayas) with a lot of backpacking/trekking mixed in.
