I don't believe that Pentax made any A-setting 55mm manual-focus lenses. Has any third party manufacturer ever set out to do this for K-mount?

you are correct on the Pentax glass.
The third party? Cosina 55/1.2 is A AFAIK, but I may be wrong on this one...
And I was wrong.... it's non A

how about the 58mm/1.4 from Voigtlander/Cosina? I just got mine and it's fantastic!

The DA* 55mm f/1.4 would qualify on bodies that don't support SDM motors. I tried one on my K10d with firmware 1.0 and it acted as a manual focus A lens (with no aperture ring). It would be manual focus only on film bodies.
