Okay, here is my short list of everything I'm considering.

Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di-II LD Aspherical [IF]

Pentax SMCP-DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 ED AL (IF) SDM

===============================================

Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 IF EX DG HSM

Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG Macro

Tamron AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF)

Hey, assuming you can afford any lens on the list, I would definitely vote for the DA* 16-50.

I've used this lens (rental) and it is a great lens. I heard also great things about the Tamron 17-50 and I am sure it costs a lot less.

I have not tried any of the longer reach lenses, so i cant comment here.

For a K-x user the DA* may be overkill K-x won't benefit from it's weather sealing. Only if you plan to upgrade to K-numero WR body sometime.

The Tamron 28-75 is acually a great lens, but then you will miss the wide end. Maybe Tammy 17-550 would suit you the best. Better if you will have opportunity to choose the sharpest of few samples.

That was a typo. He meant the 17-50.

Quite a price range you have there. You could get the Tamron 17-50 and a nice prime for the price of the Sigma 24-70 HSM (retail).

Can you live with the lack of wide angle with the lenses in the second part of the list ?

Brac, I don't find myself using the wide stuff much in Florida, because you know as well as I do, landscapes are real boring here.

In addition, if you need wide for let's say architectural, indoors, etc., 16 isn't wide enough anyway. You want a max of 12.

My vote is for the Tamron 28-75:

Fantastic range (you can still use your kit to get to 18), and a fantastic lens for the money.
