Lens coloring?

Hi All!

I recently acquired what I think are pretty good Pentax M lenses, a 28mm 2.8 and 50mm 1.7. I use these on a Pentax DSLR and love both and IQ/Bokeh is pretty darn impressive!!!

I just don't know what the small colored bands on the Aperture ring means if anything at all. On the 50 there is a green band and on the 28 there is a red/orange band, they're both very compact. I've already looked in the Lens forum but don't see any bands on any lens, so I'm just wondering...

Thanks, Rick

Those are something somebody did to the lenses. It is not native to any of the lenses as far as I know. Do the bands glow in the dark?

Thanks for the reply... You're right, I just took a look at them under a lupe and they indeed look like they were added but done very nicely. I got these from a professional photographer and I now think they were put on to be able to make a quick lens choice... a great idea!!!

Thanks again, Rick

If nothing else, it makes them unique. It's probably pinstriping tape of some sort. Either way, they are fine lenses. Enjoy them and show us what you can do with them.

previous owner probably added those as some sort of colourcoding to recognize the lenses with caps on without having to study the f stop marks... silly idea if you ask me, but whatever rocks one's boat...

Why is that silly? It's a pretty good idea, and helps to identify your gear on location and in the bag.

Yes, true but it depends on whether the bands are permanent or not. For one I would never apply anything like it to any of my lenses, no matter the price! I know where my lenses are in the bag and can easily pick the right one without having to apply any coloured bands on them...

As a kid, his mother probably labeled his shoes left and right, and he never broke the habit.
