I saw an FA* 600mm f/4 today

Good lord that thing was frikkin' HUGE. Perhaps interestingly, the gentleman at the Pentax booth told me that Pentax would still make one for you—contrary to what I've read elsewhere.

Did you happen to enquire how many clams Pentax would want in exchange for said enormous lens?

Excellent! I wonder if I could work out some sort of monthly payment?

The man only mentioned their availability offhandedly, and I think $7,000 was thrown about, but that's when we were talking about eBay auctions. But I know I read a news release earlier this year that said that production of the 600mm had ceased, but it makes me wonder that for a lens of such limited production numbers anyway, if after a certain threshold of orders was reached, some production line somewhere couldn't be cranked up for a small number of lenses. People wait for a year or more for their Morgan to be built, perhaps it's like that with these lenses.

AFAIK, FA* 600mm 1:4 was manufactured on special order for quite some time now. They never actually stopped making them.

I think similar situation is with A 50mm 1:1.2 - you can still order one in Japan and they will make one for you.

Here's a link to one of many threads discussing its discontinuation.

I wonder if that's the case why those lenses aren't advertised in catalogues and Pentax's website

I'm the happy owner of one of these monsters; very good lens, after a while you are accustomed to the size; until recently the lens was referenced as "build on order" on the Pentax japan website but it has moved recently to the list of "discontinued lenses";
Note that after having spend money for the lens you need additional cash for the high end tripod and the ballhaed - 1000 euros more - plus a monopod and a dedicated bagpack; my wallet is a bit more light now.
See some shots I have made on the other forum

Probably a little. I think my A*600mm would look like a DA 40mm Limited next to it.

Woh, that's a lens. And some fine images it produces. Thanks for sharing this - it's not everyday you see such a hunk of glass in the wild.
