Tokina AT-X 2.6/2.8 28-70

Hi All,

On my search for the (very hard to find now) Tamron 28-70 2.8 I ran into this occasion. (Tokina AT-X 2.6/2.8 28-70)

The build looks amazing (although a bit bulky and very heavy) but I can not find reliable reviews on this lens. What I can find is reports on the Pro and/or Pro II and/or Pro Sv versions on this lens, but there is no mention of any of these on the lens itself.

So, does anyone have information on this lens? Is it good? (compared to the Tamron) Is it worth the odd €350 they're charging for it? I haven't yet had a chance to test it, and I don't think I'll get the opportunity to seriously try it out before I have to decide to buy or not..

Any advice is welcome!!

Thanks!

This is probably one of the best zoom lenses ever made (for Pentax).
I have it.
It probably meets the sensor resolution, because in my tests it is equally sharp as the DA70, even better than it in the corners (it's 'full frame').
But 350 Euro is too much. The normal price is about 250 Euro.
I recently contemplated selling mine for 200 Euro (the filter ring has a dent) but then decided to keep it.

Thanks Blende8.

I am a bitr afraid that availability plays a part here too. This is the first time I see this lens for sale...
Are you sure yours is the same I was looking at? I am still a bit confused with the Pro / Pro Sv / Pro II issue..

Btw, if you are still willing to sell, PM me!

You can have a look here:
DigitalFotoNetz.de :: Thema anzeigen - Tokina 2.6-2.8 / 28-70 an der K10D

Scroll down a bit and you can see images of the lens.
There is only one 2.6-2.8. All others are pure 2.8.

Try here also. It's getting a bit old now, but is still good for data on older lenses.

Danke für die Link. The lens looks quite good indeed.
However, the link Roscot sent has two 2.6-2.8 versions?

I'll assume if the copy I saw actually was the Pro II it would say so on the lens...

Issue remains; is this lens WORTH (IQ et al) €300... (Guess I can bargain it down to that) or should I keep looking... These lenses seem to be getting rare at an alarming rate

Tokina AF 28-70mm f/2.8-2.6 AT-X Pro II - Photozone Quick Test Report / Review

is it in a shop where you can test it? and / or are they willing to return it if you arenot happy wiht it?

Thanks Phil,

Saw that one already, that's why I was getting confused with the Pro - Pro II issue... This test is the Pro II and I can't figure out what the main differences between these two are (except for Filter size, Pro = 72, Pro II = 77)

The pic on this review is from an angle that does show "Pro", but not if there's anything next to it...

To answer your question; I can test it (guess in and/or around the shop) but not sure if I can do extensive testing on the spot.. The possibility of returning it needs to be negotiated, but I assume that should not be a problem.

Still need to decide if I'll go for this one 'because I DO love the build and feel of it) or if I'll try be patient and search for the Tamron.. Hhmmm...

Does anybody know if a "Pro II" model was ever released for Pentax?
I have the "Pro" version, filter size is 77 mm.
There was a pure 2.8 version of the 28-70, that had a 72 mm filter size, but not a 2.6-2.8, AFAIK.

According to the list Phil mentioned it was.. (Are you sure yours isn't the ProII?? )

Just to add to the confusion; I can't find any mention of a 2.6/2.8 on the Tokina site..?..

<Edit>
Just found a Tamron AF SP 28-75/2.8 XR Di LD for € 330 (new) Can anyone advice what would be the better option?
</Edit>

OK, for those still interested; I found this on the DPReview forum:
<Quote>
There are 4 versions of Tokina AT-X 28-70mm:

1st version: 72mm filter thread. Metal body with black enamel finish.

2nd version: 77mm thread, used only screw-in accessory hood. Aluminum body covered in matte black texture sort of finish.

3rd version: Similar to 2nd version in appearance. Supplied with dedicated bayonet petal hood. Known as AT-X Pro II 1:2.6-2.8 in the US. The same imported from Japan were marked AT-X Pro 1:2.8. AF speed and coatings were claimed to be improved from the predecessor.

4th & current version: AT-X SV (SV=Super Value). A low cost variant of ATX Pro II as the name implied. Lens body made of plastic in smooth black.

I have the 3rd version and a KM 28-75D. Build quality wise the Tokina is way superior. It works fine on 7D.
</Quote>

Found some reviews without knowing which exact type I'm looking at (although the version I'm looking at has a metal screw-on hood so I'm guessing it's the 2nd version Pro), most of them raving...

Maybe I'll go for this lens anyway. I can even throw in a flash and still spend less €€ than the DA* I was at first considering. Wide angle prime'll come later

Well, I went to the shop today, and:
They won't come down to below € 310
No lenscap
(very) old lensbag (of a Nikon lens)
The'll sell me a lenscap and a UV filter both for 1/2 price (€ 30 total)
Returning the lens if not satisfied is NOT an option

So I didn't buy. Yet. Gotta think this one over because for € 333 I can get a new Tamron 28-75. (on the way home I did change my mind twice)
I did love the feel of the lens though. Solid and autofocus VERY snappy... Hmm..

Interesting facts:

I noticed that the K10D can't deal with 2.6 in automatic mode, so it's effectively a 2.8 lens. (the notch to rotate the aperture ring is awkwardly located under the flash)

The camera thinks it is an smc Pentax-F 28-80 F3.5-4.5 (EXIF info) ??
