50-200mm or 55-300mm

I have a K100D, but I have a lust for the K-x. In addition I need a mid range telephoto lens. So, Iím considering a kit with a 18-55 mm lens and either the 50 Ė200 mm or 55-300 mm. I understand the new 18-55 mm is better than the one which I have, so for the minimal extra with a new body, itís worth it. However, my question is which tele. My main use would be in the 50/55 to 150 mm range, so either would be acceptable. Does anyone have information on which is best in the 100 mm range?

Thanks for any thoughts.

David

57 other threads about the Sigma/Tamron/Pentax xx-300 all have the same conclusion :-0

55-300 has the best IQ.

If you can afford it the 55-300 is the overall better lens, definitely has better image quality. However, if you use the 50-200 mostly outside, it's pretty decent if you can stop it down a bit. It's also small for a zoom and focuses quickly.

50-200 vs 55-300

It sounds like the 55-300 should be my choice. In the kit that I looked at it is only about $30 more than the 50-200. I have the 70-300 Tamron, but would like some better IQ. And faster would be nice. Will one of these give me that?

Well comparing to what I have heard about the Tamron, and given your idea of 100mm range either would be an improvement. With your Tamron, I understand some stop it down to f8 to try and tame purple fringe and other flares. Open up either the 50-200 or 55-300 even to f6.3 to let in more light and achieve a faster shutter speed and you will still get a better image.
If you are suggesting that there is a Kx 55-300 kit that is only $30 more than a Kx 50-200 kit, that is a pretty soft expenditure. If you were only going to shoot in the 50-100mm range, wanted something like your Tamron but better and a used 55-300 were $300 and used 50-200 were $170, the 200 would be very satisfying.
Have a look around the Forum's Pentax Lens Database/Reviews.
Just to qualify my remarks, I have never used the Tamron 70-300 but I do have the Pentax 50-200. My brother in law has a Kx and the Tamron 70-300 and also complains about purple fringe so I let him use my 50-200 for an extended period. He noticed greater image quality by comparison and did not have to stop down as much. Faster? Yes. Better iq? Yes. And most likely true for the Pentax 55-300.

If you have a little extra cash, i suggest you get the body only with 16-45 + 55-300 or DA40 + 55-300.

Both are very good combo that's not TOO costly.

I have the Da 40 + Da 55-300 combo with my k-x.

Takes some really impressive pictures. Haven't used the 18-55 for some time. I love the 55-300...it seems to be the better lens.

Now if only I could get that DA 15 limited........

Right now Amazon has the K-x with the 18-55 and the 50-200 for $609. The K-x with the 18-55 and 55-300 is $640. The K-x with the 18-55 only is $495 and the body only is $440. So I guess that makes the 18-55 $55 and the 50-200 $114. You can't hardly beat that. Even $145 for the 55-300 looks good to me.

You can easily buy a used but "DA" version of 55-200 for $90-100. But the 55-300 is a really good deal. So it's really up to you. =]

Definitely 55-300 if funds permit, and if they don't at present, I'd suggest waiting until they do.

Yep, it's that significant a difference in the quality (and versatility) between the lenses.

Thanks for all the great advice. It looks like the 55-300 is definitely the recommendation. Now I just need to get my pennies together and go for it.
