Focusing backlash in Vivitar / Kiron WA lenses

I have a vivitar (by kiron) 24mmF2 and a Kiron 28mmF2 which suffer from backlash (for lack of a better description) in the focusing.

the 24mm is so bad that the aperture is changing slightly.

I suspect there is a problem in the focusing helix, and was wondering if any one else had seen this issue.

Note both these lenses have been apart due to oil from the helix leakinginto the aperture causing the blades to stick, and removal of the front group does put a lot of stress on things because the front group is loctited in place. It is probably related
