I suggest to keep saving up and get a super zoom. Either a used 18-250 or the new 18-135 WR.

It really all depends on what you want to shoot, but for a little over $300 you could get a DA40 Limited f/2.8 which is a wonderful little lens.
But to stay on budget if I were you I'd probably go for the new DA (L) 35.

New copies are offered on ebay for $300, used can down below $250.

In terms of merely of IQ, you'd probably have to pay at least twice that price to find a zoom lens that would equal, let alone surpass, the 16-45.

Perhaps you should consider the new DA 35/2.4 AL lens that was just released and you would have some left over to get 1 or 2 nice mf lenses such as a fast 50. As far as zooms go, the DA 16-45mm is a good suggestion.

It really really depends on what you want to shoot. But
1 lens: Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 or the new pentax DA 35mm f/2.4
2 lenses: Pentax K 135mm f/2.5 and either pentax A 50mm f/1.7 or pentax K 35mm f/2.0
More than two lenses, I have to agree with Mike and Lowell, grab youself a bag of taks and a pentax screwmount adaptor.

NaCl(as a general rule it's a good idea to agree with Mike and Lowell, they very rarely are wrong)H2O

Easy, the DA 40mm.

The KX was made for that lens.

I suggest the new DA-L 35mm f/2.4 (and you'll probably have money left over for a couple of Takumars )

To me, it seems that for your "one $300 lens" you can either go zoom or prime.

If zoom, the Stigma or Tamron /2.8s, or the Pentax /4s are probably the way to go (unless you want an 18-200 ultrazoom, which won't do much for your image quality).

If prime, then the new 35/2.4, a used 40/2.8, a used 50/1.4 or 50/1.7, or a used Sigma (24/1.8, 28/1.8, 30/1.4, or 50/1.4), or possibly a used FA 100/2.8 Macro, would be some of your best autofocus options. The Sigma 1.4s might be bulky for your k-x, and are usually biased for center sharpness, but they are good glass regardless. The best bokeh are probably found on the new 35/2.4 and the 50/2.8. Personally, I prefer the 35mm to the 40mm as a focal length on APS-C, but this is clearly a matter of taste.
