DA 55-300 (is there something faster in this range)?
Yes, faster, much larger, a lot more money; DA*60-250mm f/4.

Let's play. Here is my best 5 lens system:

DA 12-24mm f4 (landscape)
FA 31mm f1.8 Ltd (normal)
FA 50mm f1.4 (artistic and portrait)
DA* 50-135mm f2.8 (portrait)
DA* 300mm f4 (wildlife and sport)

FA*20
FA 43
CV AL 125 macro
FA*200 macro
FA*250-600

Tempted to say: 5 X any of the last 3 on my list --as long as I get to keep them after 3 years...I'm willing to suffer...

Hmmm....

Sigma 8-16
FA 50/1.4
Bigma
A* 200 f4 macro

And I'm honestly not sure what after that. Probably a more reasonable sized mid-zoom.

My Fast 5

If I were starting over, I suppose I would get the following:

DA 12-24
FA 31
DA 40
DA 70
Sigma 105 Macro

It would be *really* difficult to give up my 10-17 fish eye and my FA 85 Soft Focus, however.

Did I already post in this thread?

From what I have:
A 16
FA20-35
FA 43
Tokina 90/2.5
FA 75-300

Although I might be tempted to sub in my A50/1.2, FA 50/2.8 or F35-70 for the fisheye.
In an ideal set up, I would switch in the DA 55-300. Hey, I'm almost there!

  • DA 15mm
  • Zeiss distagon 28mm 2.0
  • FA 43mm
  • DA 70mm (I say it without trying it because I want more compact than the 77 I have)
  • FA 135mm 2.8

If hiking more than 10 miles in a day leave the Zeiss behind.

Mika - a question not a criticism. Why would you select 4 lenses covering only 26mm between them and why two with only 4mm between them ? What's so special about those lenses ?

At these focal lengths (24-40mm), the differences between the lenses is very dramatic. Wide-angle zooms, in my opinion, have too many problems with their design to be worthwhile. That is why I only have one zoom lens on my list, and it's a normal to short-telephoto focal length.

As to what's so special about the lenses, top on my list is spacial and color rendition, then speed and sharpness.

given my shooting style, and my prime preference it would have o be the following if money wasn't an object (though i would prefer a 7 lens kit)

Da 14/15 either though i have the 14
FA31
FA43
DA55
FA77

add the DFA100 macro and the DA* 200 for a complete kit ( i use the long end much less

I cover most of this range right now with old MF lenses as I don't have the 3 + grand to spare it would take to accumulate this
