need advice on wide angle lens which one to get

Hi veteran Pentaxians,

I'm seriously thinking about switching over from Nikon to Pentax. It's both exciting and frustrating at the same time. I love wide angle lens for street photography, and was thinking of getting the 12-24 mm f4. But I read several reviews complaining of the purple fringing/CA. How bad is it really? Is there any way to deal with it? What other wide angle lenses would you recommend?

Thanks!

I have no problems with this. The Pentax/Samsung 12-24 is just a great UWA lens. The very best though is the Pentax DA 15 limited, according to most people. Wouldn't worry about the 12-24

The very best is DA 14 f2,8. DA15 is cool and tiny, but not the best overall.
The Pentax DA12-24 is great if you demand zooming, but there is more CA than with monofocal lenses. However I don't think the fringing is that different from the Nikkor 12-24. Both Pentax and Nikon cameras feature automatic removal of CA when shooting for jpeg and in RAW processing the removal is easy.

The 12-24 has had little appreciable CA/PF from my results, and I use a CPL filter on it most of the time.

I regard the 12-24 as having prime-like quality, and disagree with the previous poster - it produces considerably better microcontrast and colours than the DA 14 IMO. You'd expect that, though, from a lens around twice the price of a DA 14.

I've never tried the DA 15 before but many can attest to its fine IQ as well, but I can vouch that the 12-24 is an excellent lens in every way (except it not being WR, and perhaps that it doesn't have the top build quality of the DA ltd series lenses).

The 12-24 does fringe/ca, whatever you want to call it, in certain conditions. That said, I can make ANY lens do it. The 12-24 is not unique in that way (and it's easily dealt with when it occurs).

If you want a zoom, I'd easily recommend the DA12-24, if it's prime you desire, DA15 Limited is also very nice. The DA14 is a stop faster, and twice the size of the DA15. I had both, sold the 14 and kept the 15.

I respect your opinion but I did a comparision on a tripod to determine if I should buy DA12-24 od DA14 and DA 14 won it for me. But that may be some sample variation after all.

I own the Sigma 10-20 but im thinking of selling it and get the DA 12-24mm due to barrel distortion. Those who own or use both the sigma and the DA how big is the improvement of the 12-24 in terms of distortion?

There is a thread dedicated to each of those lenses.

Many people lately praise DA15. This one is on my mind too but for now I'll cast my vote to Sigma 10-20/4-5.6. The newer HSM f3.5 version is reportedly not as good as the old version. I have had the old 10-20 for nearly 3 years now and can only recommend it if you don't mind the size...

Does your Sigma manual focus @ infinity? Mine appears to be not in focus

One day...one day...I will own this lens.

And I will begin to be God-like in my photography.

As opposed to just being another putz with a camera.

How about Sigma's 24-70 2.8 HSM?

12-24 might be too close for most street shooting unless you're a papparzzi? OR you could just get both lenses?
