What I want from Pentax...lens wise...

I have a nice repertoire of Pentax lenses:
  • 12-24mm- great lens...I love it...almost always attached to my K10D...it's that good
  • 16-45....great lens...I loved it...till I got the 12-24mm...still use it as my daily carry around lens on my KM
  • 18-55 kit...I'd rather have had a price reduction, but it came with the KM
  • 50mm F 1.4 normal- another great little lens...boy are the low light pix... creamy and is it sharp
  • 50mm Macro F 2.8....excellent
  • 55-300 mm....for a consumer lens.....tack sharp...even up to 300mm...punches outside of it's weight class.
Forgot my 10-17mm Fish Eye.

What I want now is something like a Pentax 400 mm...F 5.6 is ok.....in other words a Pentax version of the Canon 400 mm F 5.6 L lens.

The Canon sells for about $ 1500 CAD...I'd be willing to pay this for a Pentax 400mm...built like the Canon...robust and metal.

I know I can buy a Sigma 120-400 or a 150-500...but I want Pentax and the Pentax quality I've grown accustomed .
Am I alone ??

Are there others that want Pentax to bring out a lens like this ?

I'd love to see Pentax bring out something longer than the current 300mm limit they're in. I'd love to see Pentax bring out the following:

300mm f2.8
400mm f5.6
400mm f2.8
500mm f4
600mm f4
800mm f5.6

They've had most of these lenses in production at one time or another either in manual aperture and focus, auto-aperture and manual focus, or auto aperture and focus. They' currently have none of these in production (although I've heard that the 600 f4 can still be ordered on a very limited run). The thing is will they do it and when? If the K5, Kr, and future bodies can expand their market share and hence the marketability of these lenses, then yes. If not, then there's only Sigma...

I want time and subject matter to use the lenses I already have. I know a lot of photogs love the ultra long lenses for wildlife and with good reason. I've yet however to come across something I couldn't get with what's in my kit, assuming I have it with me.

Who cares about the Canon L lens? Pentax, just bring back the FA* 400 f5.6 EF ID and it will be fine.

Wildlife and nature around here sucks, so I can do without something that long. Give me something goofy like a DA* 27mm f1.9.

I would prefer a 400mm f/2.8. I have the AF-S nikkor 400mm f/2.8 IF ED VR and the canon equivalent lenses and they are really quite versatile in conjunction with 1.4X and 2X teleconverters.

A Nikon 400 mm F 2.8 costs $ 9400 in Canada. That lens alone costs more than my entire Pentax digital camera collection.

I don't need an F 2.8 400 for outdoor wildlife photography...a F 5.6 400 would do fine.

However an F 2.8 400 would be good for photographers who like to do sports photography in stadiums, etc. and have the bucks.

I was using the Canon 400mm F 5.6 as an example of a modern, excellent quality lens.

Chicago is about 1400 miles to the south of where I live. Wildlife up here is abundant and a 400 F 5.6 would be great.

In fact I think Pentax could do with expanding their lens line throughout....including goofy...although I think Pentax already does goofy well...if my 10-17mm Fish eye is anything to go by.

haha, any of those lenses would be uber expensive, pentax just isn't in the market right now to compete cost wise. =/

I really wish pentax would revive the FA 28-70mm into a DA* 24-70. And since pentax usually ends up with goofy ranges, i would love to use a DA *23-74mm. haha

Isn't that a rather old one with mediocre quality?

Most of these lenses doesn't make sense anymore. They were designed when high quality shooting was done at max 200 ISO on film. Nowadays almost everyone use cropped sensors for long telework and the high ISO quality now was pure science fuction in the film days. A 400/4 makes sense, not an F:5.6 except as a zoom, as it is the longest and fastest than can be handheld and it will weight slightly less than a 300/2.8. Few will choose a 600/4 over a 500/4 with todays cropped sensors for cost and weight reasons.

the canon 400mm f/5.6 is actually surprisingly good all things considered.
