Need honest advice about lens's

I purchased a Pentax 70-300 mm and tried it out yesterday at the zoo. I noticed that the pics that were taken at 200-300 mm were not very sharp. Im not sure if this is the lens or if there is a better lens out there that is not to expensive?I m looking around 350.00 or below.
I want to take this lens back and I know they are going to give me a sales pitch on how this is the best lens ..blah i want to get advice from someone outside of the store.

Hmmm, there is no such thing as a Pentax 70-300mm lens The only one that is close is the FA-J 75-300mm. That lens is not know to be a stellar performer at focal lengths over 200mm (see

Alternatives are the Sigma 70-300mm and Tamron 70-300mm. The Pentax DA 50-200mm is generally very well regarded, but only goes to 200mm, obviously.

Personally, I chose the DA 50-200mm over both the Sigma and the Tamron. It felt better built, seemed to produce better images from the samples I saw here and on DPreview, and I prefered the 50mm wide end for versatility.

Oh you are correct, it is the FA-J .I couldnt remember the model Thank you! Is a lens that just shoots 100-300 possibly better since there is "less lens" for the image to go through/ I really do not need the 70-100 since the lens i have now goes to 55. I dont think its that necessary ..

That lens is not the best performer. Not too expensive either though..

The Pentax DA 50-200 is a really nice lens. Good color, sharpness, contrast and bokeh. Quite affordable too.

For more reach you basically have two options. Find a sleeper that's cheap or plunk down some big money on a fast telephoto.

A real sleeper out there is the "Sigma 100-300 DL f4.5-6.7"

Check out the IQ report here

Compare that IQ test to the "Sigma 100-300mm f/4 APO EX IF HSM AF" here

The DL kills it..
