New walk around lens

I own a K20 and have the standard Kit lens 18-55 and the Pentax 50mm 1.4. I'm looking for a good general purpose walk around lens like the Sigma 17-70, the older one without lens stabilization. Does anyone recommend this vs. the new one? What other lens suggestions do you have?

It would help if you told us what you dislike or find limiting with your current 18-55.

That being said, I can vouch for the Sigma 17-70 being a very good lens. I've used one since 2006, first on my K10D and now on the K-7 (less frequently now, but I'm still very satisfied with the results when I do).

The two versions of the Sigma are supposed to be quite similar regarding performances. I own the "old" one and love it, it's an excellent package. You couldn't go wrong with it.
