Cosmicar and Osawa Lenses??? Anyone? - Just received free lenses!!!

Yesterday I was talking to a co-worker of mine about my Pentax K-X. He told me that even though he currently owns a Canon T1i he has always been a pentax fan and had an old film slr camera and lenses.

When he came to work today he dropped a box at my desk and said that I could have anything I wanted for free. Inside the box there was 3 lenses with K-Mount.

1) Pentax-M 1:2 50mm
2) Cosmicar MC Auto Zoom CPC Phase2 CCT 70-200mm Macro 1:4
3) Osawa MC 1:3.5-4.5 35-105mm Macro

All lenses are in great condition. The pentax prime has been discussed in the forums before, but I have never heard of Cosmicar or Osawa lenses. Does anyone know anything about these?

imtheguy... Yes it did!!!! The pentax prime from what I read in the forums is a very good lens, I was looking at getting the f1.4 or f1.7 version of it but for free f2.0 will be more than enough.

I just found the same Cosmicar lens on ebay, here is the link:
COSMICAR CPC PHASE 2 CCT 70-200MM F4 MACRO PENTAX PKA - eBay (item 320610427168 end time Nov-08-10 15:11:14 PST)

I have not been able to find anything at all on the Osawa one.

Fancy buying a 500d when he could have had a K-x.

I think the CPC Phase2 70-200mm Macro 1:4 is actually the same lens as SMC Pentax A 4/70-210mm. And it's very good. Congrats! Here's a quote from SMC Pentax-A 70-210mm F4 Lens Reviews - Pentax Lens Review Database written by FotoPete:

I have the MC Auto Zoom CPC Phase 2 CCT 70-200/4. Its the cosmicar rebrand of the SMC-A 70-210. I'm not sure where the 10mm went but I held them side by side at the store and could not tell the difference. The A 70-210 at the store had alot of dust inside and a slippy focus ring that needed service so I went for the CPC instead.

Great, thanks for the info. That makes sense based on the following statement from wikipedia:
"Cosmicar is a division of Pentax, it commercialized video lenses, but some were released for the k mount.
Cosmicar 28-80mm f3.5-4.5
Cosmicar 70-200mm f4"

Pentax K mount - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The cosicar lens looks identical (minus the 200 vs 210mm) to the SMC Pentax-A 70-210mm/f4 lens.

How about the Osawa? All I have read is that Osawa was a distributor of Mamiya and thanks to epa4wd I know have the specs for the lens. But is it a good lens?

The Cosmicar 70-200/4 is a 11:9 lens solution: MC Cosmicar 70-200/4

The SMC Pentax-A 70-210/4 is a 13:10 lens solution: A 70-210/4

So they are completely different optical designs. In addition, the Cosmicar has no super multi coating, though some simpler multi layer coating.

Cosmicar was a trade name Pentax used for their video surveilance lenses in C and S mount. Since Hoya took over they have started selling these lenses under the Pentax brand directly. For a while in the 80's they released some low budget lenses in K mount as Cosmicar.

Have fun with the lenses!

I shoot the the Osawa 70-210 f4-5 on my K20d. I've also read about the Mamiya connection. The lens is very good, and I suspect your focal range will not be any different. Throughout the range, I get very nice shots and excellent sharpness. Colors are honest, but the best thing is the exceptional bokeh of the lens. The only downside to my copy is the zoom creep, though fortunately the lens' zoom does not have a long throw. I have to believe you will be hapy with the lens. I posted some shots with mine in Stevebrot's "Off Brand Club."

I suggest you test the lens to know if they suit you. For instqance, I have used Takumar Bayonets (28 and 135 mm) and they were much better than what their reputations led me to think.

the bottom line is, great pictures can be shot with average glass. So if you like them, then they are good for you.

Well, it is even quite common to see ebay sellers push the different Cosmicar/Takumar 70/80-200/210 zoom lenses in a way that they can be misstaken for the SMC Pentax-A 70-210 (probably the 2nd best zoom in this range by Pentax only second to the FA*). Since the Takumar was even sold in a version that is labelled "Pentax", but missing "SMC" it is easy.

Don't know anything really about the performance of these lenses. But they are free, and two of them have the A connection. So it is worth celebrating. Looking forward to some shots. And reviews.

I haven't had a chance to test them out yet (busy at work) but definitely agree that until then won't know if they suit my needs or not, then again as some of you point out they are free... and in the even they don't work for me I can always get $$$ for them and buy something else.

If anyone has additional information to share post it here, just curious to know other pentaxians experience with these (Osawa and Comicar) lenses.

Thanks for all that have contributed/replied to this thread.
