I've never read this thread, so I'm glad it was revived and I was able to soak up the information and experience. It's still relevant information.

FWIW, I now have neither of these M series lenses. I have the K 28/3.5 (which is superb) and the mark II M 28/2.8, which I have used very rarely on digital but have found it to be superior to the mark I. I've used it more on film, where I don't like it much due to distortion.

Er ... Why not? If the post says something sensible and the subject is still of interest, which it is?

Because it's Thread Necromancy. The OP doesn't even have the lenses that were being discussed anymore. If there is something worth saying about a subject start a new thread and a new discussion.

Thread Necromancy doesn't apply here - it's not a topic which becomes irrelevant over the time or just because OP no longer interested in it. Many people contributed to it and it's more beneficial if the new information is added into the same thread rather than segregated across the threads.

I think it's as relevant as it was three years back and maybe it can save some money for someone.
You definitely helped me. Many thanx!

Wow, a thread revival after almost four years

I now have no M series 28mm lenses - I didn't like any of them. I have an A series 28mm f/2.8, which is reputed to optically the same as the M 28/2.8 mark II, but I think the A series is much better. It's soft wide open but very sharp at f/4 and has very modern rendering with great colour and contrast. I'd recommend it over any M series 28mm (though I haven't tried the f/2).

I've recently been thinking about getting a manual 28mm. Quite a few variations to choose from. I'm happy for as much info I can find.

I have a DFA 28-105, an amazing lens. Anyone looking for a 28mm lens should give it a look. You get 29-105 mm as bonus.

The Lens Review Database is informative but you’re better to ignore the scores and read the texts (and look at sample images). From my personal experience with 28’s:
  • K28/2 is sublime, but $800 is a lot of money - OOF highlights are impressive
  • K28/3.5 wins the Price to IQ contest - very sharp and vibrant
  • M28/2 is very, very good stopped down a bit - coatings render cooler than K lenses; sharp enough
  • M28/3.5 is very good and sharp, about as good as M28/2 stopped down
  • M28/2.8 version 2 is much better than version 1
I don’t have any A 28’s

The fact you can sharpen up any image to taste in post these days leaves little to recommend sharpness as a defining factor. Also, I think I read somewhere here that the M28/2,8 is a superlative lens for IR photography.

My personal rating-
M28 2.8 mediocre
M28 3.5 great
Tak Bayonet 28 2.8 Brilliant
A28 2.8 just a bit more than brilliant.

Have lost track on how many times I've been to the lens data base and sample pictures thread. K 28/2 is off the table because of cost. Probably will not pull the trigger on M 28/2.8 version 1. K 3.5 would be my first choice of the others. Followed by A 28/2.8. I'm in no hurry so will wait until I stumble onto a good deal. Thanks for your input.

AFAIC K28/3.5 is a good choice, but I have a bias (click link in my sig)
